	When i drove out this morning, i noticed a wheelbarrow full of bags of cooking apples outside someone's house with a poster to say........Please help yourself. How nice is that!

	When I did my paper round ( I was 31 when I started it ) there was a woman who would leave a box of scabby old windfalls with a notice inviting me to help myself. I didn't because there were considerably better available elsewhere on the round but she would be waiting by the door, waiting to show the box to me. When that failed she would be waiting near the door with a carrier bag full of the manky old fruit, daily! It got to be like a challenge with me trying to creep up the path un-noticed. This was before I came to the other woman who needed to tell me daily about her prodigy daughter.

	There were hardly any on that crab tree I know about this year. The same with the wild damsons I generally have.
