Is it me or is this board becoming static and stale again? So many regualr posters seem to have disappeared, do you think the wumming has scared them away?

All the boards seem slow, including the look-up ones :-0

It could be that with the introduction of the hobbies and military boards the number of threads are the same, just spread more thinly.

If previous regulars have been put off by the disputes earlier this year, they may return in due course. Mind you, they may have found other sites to use with like minded individuals!
Site problems may have put some people off + the cost of renewing at the new tarriff

Hayley, I thought at first it was a thread about posting and then waiting an age for it to upload. During which time, the debate has well moved on. This site does seem very slow in that respect.

But I have noticed the slowness too. Posted a couple and no posts at all. Last one was Dario Franchitti's crash. Apparently it was an identical crash to the one that killed a British driver some years ago. Same track, same place, same speed, same situation. Yet Dario (one of our great Scottish drivers and cousin of Paul di Resta) is alive and fairly well.

Apparently his survival is due to the safety cell they made cars have after the fatal accident. And these developments make our little Corsas and Fiestas so much safer. Many of us now survive road accidents that would have certainly killed us a few years ago.

I felt the crash was worthy of a post or two. And Marvin Rainwater's death went unnoticed, except for my OP :-( :-( Only about 5 even viewed that post.

Not you no Hayley, there are fewer p[eople posting and the hobbies board is not moving much either. There hasn't been any trouble for a few weeks now so it may well be that the novelty has worn off, there are other chat sites to visit, more people stay on facebook where they can express their opinions without being reported etc.

Maybe when the winter sets in people will return. Occasionally recently I have seen 'old' names appearing on the boards so they are still around. I think people who enjoy being controversial are more likely to go on facebook as they can get away with putting what they think on there. :-)

OneFootInTheGrave Report 9 Oct 2013 10:12

Lately I have been reluctant to post new threads, for reasons which I will not go into in case I get my fingers smacked again, fed up with threads being taken down a windy road where they end up not reflecting anything that the OP post was about :-(

I think a lot of us oldies really can't be arsed any more, Hayley.

I expect we all have our reasons.

Think we must admit that the daily thread by Mersey has been a revelation. I don't contribute, but look in occasionally. And it is very fast moving, great fun and many many posts.

Have just checked the rules, and we are allowed to meander, reverse, accelerate, brake. In fact, some threads in the past have meandered rather a lot and become very long and successful threads. :-)

So many differing opinions and a "report button" was always going to be detrimental to the site,

Maybe folks are just fed up with reporting threads and nasty comments that go on most days,it has been better of late I might add.

I always have considered that the Boards are for people seeking help with their research but some helpers are very nasty with their comments when people ask for help and just more or less tell them to go look for yourself here or there , they just don't ask again .
The Boards are very quiet and a big difference to 2006 when I first joined.

Very sad I think ...I love my hobby going to hang around for a bit longer.

I know for certain that a considerable number of regular posters on these boards now spend their time on Facebook as part of a closed "Friends" group. There were several reasons why they moved on, amongst them, no trolls or WUM's, freedom of thought and speech, no wanton use "Review" button. It is a shame that they no longer contribute to these boards as between them they have excellent genealogy knowledge and skills and were always willing to use them to help other GR members solve their puzzles.

And, of course, other genealogy forums are available.

Rootschat is nearly as slow as Genes at present.

What I think has happened is that more and more people have become interested in their Family History, but are taking the time to do their own reasearch and only come onto Forums when they are well and truly stuck.

Yes, you do get the odd newbie who asks the questions that you look at and think, WHAT!!!! But I know that even when I started I rarely asked questions just looked at my problems from a different angle. And read posts on here for questions that I may have asked but did not wish to repeat.

So I think it is slow all over. And the FB pages on Ancestry, Genes and FMP are just full of people looking for living relatives or complaining about the sites!!!! :-) :-) ;-)

'Emma' Report 9 Oct 2013 13:08

I must admit that I am bored quite a bit of the
time with the boards even though I visit Mersey's
thread every day, look in on others.
In winter months I get back into Ancestry so not on
here so much.
Maybe it's me who is getting stale and had too much
of a good thing on here.

Merlin Report 9 Oct 2013 13:33

Its Slow, everybody, with the exception of Genes, knows that, but they will not accept it is their fault ,always saying (It something wrong with your computor) where as in fact its theirs.Even the fact that some people have no longer got "Emoticons" time they got real and fixed the problems instead of making Lame excuses all the time. :o(((>

Gins. Merseys thread is great "When you can get on it" Its just GR being slow ,almost in reverse. It pees you off not being able to post properly,i/e being thrown off a few times for no reason. :o((>
