I was thinking of buying a Kindle and friend insisted I borrow her's before I bought one as she does not like it so last w/end I borrowed her one but it felt funny in my hands and have handed it back not sure whether to buy or not. Any feed back would be interesting. :-)

Know how you feel.
I can read books on my iPad,but I only read when I go to bed...and theres nothing nicer than cuddling down with a book....that's my opinion,but suppose you get used to having a tablet instead. :-)

they are brilliant Nolls - had one for my birthday last year and was horrified at first, but with help from Curry's - who are fantastic by the way - I quickly got the hang of it and now I download books from Amazon all the time - very often they are free, mostly 99p - I have over forty books on mine now and it's so handy to pop in your bag if youl'e going somewhere like, say the doctors, something to read while you wait - easy to hold and read in bed as well

I also had one for my birthday last year, and have had some excellent free book downloads from Amazon. It didn't take me long to get used to it and it is great for travel.
One of the main reasons I enjoy the kindle is that I sometimes suffer from pain in my wrists and hands (suppose it could be arthritis as I have that in my knees) and even the weight of a book, plus holding it to keep the page open can make the pain worse, and my kindle is very light :-D
I am reading a 'real' book at the moment though ;-)

A kindle for me all the way.....Id be lost without mine...im also thinking of upgrading soon .....It goes with me everywhere.....

Love mine, especially when going on holiday, and love the fact you can adjust the print size. In some lights a larger font is easier to read. Great for air travel. I do also buy paperbacks occasionally as I love the feel of a book but the two go easily side by side. And, as Ann says the free and very cheap books are great. :-)

Thanks everyone Brenda I'm sort of with you at the moment love my books But my wrists like Lindi are dodgy and find books heavy and awkward to hold (ah me this old age aint what it's made out to be is it?) What do you mean help from Curry's Ann did you buy it from there? The price on Amazon is certainly a big incentive have noticed how low the prices can be (wonder if the writers are missing out now?) also as you say Ann in G the fact the print size can be adjusted is certainly interesting and Mersey by upgrading what does that mean what extras do you get is it just the number of books you can add? I really don't know much about them at all . The one thing I did find with the one I borrowed I found it quite heavy but my daughter said hers was much lighter Ohh the problems deciding it's my b/d in Aug so will have to make up my mind before then. OH another thing can you get all books for kindle or is it just a special few??

If you also buy a cover it makes the kindle feel more like a book. One of the things I initially found was without it, I was getting cramp just using my thumb to 'turn' the page. That was remedied when the cover arrived as it gave it a bit more thickness.

Have a look at the Kindle Store on Amazon to see what's on offer - most newly published in hardback are available fairly soon for the Kindle. There was probably about a 2 week delay when the most recent Dan Brown was on the bookshelves.

As one who hangs on to books whether the electronic version or paper, on the kindle there are over 200 read and 4 pages of to be read!

I have the basic one Nolls (cheapest haha )- it is ok but maybe the paperwhite would be easier to read.
Son's g/f has the Kindle fire - much heavier.
Loads of books available Nolls, go into Amazon and look before you buy the Kindle.
The books that are free are often either new authors, or they have a new book coming out and the previous one is offered free, sometimes only for a few days, to gain readers.
Go into a shop where they sell them and have a look and a feel lol, tell them you are getting ideas for your b/day pressie and won't be buying ;-)

I absolutely love books, love the feel of them, the smell of them, the look of old well read books, love musty old bookshops. I swore I'd never have a kindle. No way, not for me, never.

Christmas before last Mr C didn't know what to get me so thought "she loves reading, I'll get her a kindle". He got me a kindle touch, thought I'd give it a try so as not to hurt his feelings - totally hooked on it.

A few months ago I bought a kindle fire hd, it's fantastic. It's also a really good tablet. Apart from reading, it's got a good internet browser (often use it for GR), email, I watch tv on it, play games, skype, just about everything I do on my laptop. Highly recommended.

Have had some great books for free (and some utter tripe).

ADDED: I'd also say it's broadened my horizons as to what I read. If I was browsing a bookshelf I'd possibly go for certain authors or certain genres of book. When you see something on amazon and it's free or under £1 you're more tempted to read something different.

Yes the more I read the more I'm beginning to think.... I think Det a cover might be a good idea I can't get through on the site you gave me will try it later but I am laughing I have just got the hardback D.Brown book and it is sooo heavy oh my goodness I read it in bed with a pillow under it also OH and I have just been talking tonight about throwing out some books (we are thinking of down sizing) so Kindle would be handy there another tick for it!
Lyndi it's a good idea to go to the shops will drag PH down this week I think and see what he says but I think it's going to have to be the very simple one MC once you start talking about what you can do with the dearer type well I think I will give it a miss I'm still on my cheap £25 phone and can hardly use that never mind a Kindle that can do TV + all else - me and elec gadgets don't go well together except the very simple ones lol! :-D

Yes, its always better to handle before you buy. Many other highstreet stores and bookshop chains now sell them. The cheapest version is c£69 The link might not open cos I'm automatically signed in to Amazon!

I love books - always have. Lucky me - I have a son in law who sells books :-)

Never thought I would like to use a Kindle but I bought one after seeing the advantages when travelling. I can take loads of books with me on the Kindle and they don't weigh anything :-D It is easy on the eyes because it isn't backlit and the text size is adjustable. I love it.

I still buy craft books although I download magazines on my IPad. Never thought I'd be such a fan of new technology :-)

I got a Kindle for my birthday last year, and I wouldn't be without it!

I live in a small town, with no bookshop, and the local library is hopeless ~ lots of books for children, and classics, but I don't think they've bought a new novel for at least ten years :-(

I don't think the books in the library get taken very often........ last time I was there I had to ask for assistance getting a book off the shelf. Most of the books have a plastic covering, and they were stuck together :-(

The last time I read a paper book it felt weird, too bulky, after the slim Kindle.

Like you Nolls, I,ve been toying with the idea of buying a Kindle. have been a book addict ever since I could read, but living abroad makes sourcing books in English a real pain, plus being able to get TV on it would be good because Sky access to English TV is due to close sometime this summer & although I will be able to get it on my laptop, the Kindle would be handy for viewing outside or in bed.
Only problem is the price of a Kindle Fire & being a technophobe, would I get the hang of it.

Once you get the hang of it it really is quite easy. If I can use it I'm sure anyone can :-)

Wisechild I would certainly think the Kindle would be great for you but like you I don't think I would get the hang of the dearer one , Honestly neither OH nor I can't even do a mobile or the TV properly we have to wait for kids to come or g/kids our main TV was off recently for a whole week and we were thinking of getting a new one...dur came in and in 5 sec she got it going!

I still have the first version which I think is maybe heavier than the Kindle touch which son in law has. Mine has a cover on it which makes it easier to handle. The newer all singing all dancing one sounds good but as I already have an IPad it would be a bit over the top.
