£5 tip?! I've never paid more than £5 for a haircut. And why tip them? They make their money out of what they charge.

Yes, I used to tip my hairdresser £5 for a £40-£50 cut/blowdry and colour.....but then I was a waitress and relied on my tips. I had been management but could earn almost twice as much waitressing.

I remember a couple of occasions when a friend of mine didn't like the look of a couple of young girls or an oldish man on his own who came into the restaurant and said you can serve them....the two girls were hairdressers and the man was a taxi driver....both were good tippers :-D

Maggie ...............

I've had the same experience as you

I keep my hair short, but it is very fine, and has a mind of its own .............. most hairdressers say it is as fine as baby's hair.

It has to be cut just so, or I can do nothing with it, it does not hold any kind of shape, etc

I've paid horrendous amounts, and the result has been terrible.

I've only ever had 3 hairdressers who have been able to cut it and then it has looked decent afterwards, AND that I have been able to maintain myself.

Two of those are the current one and her immediate predecessor, who both worked for this el cheapo chain Great Cuts.

hair cuts for seniors are $9.95 ..... or approximately £5. A shampoo is $5 extra. No extra charge for the shampoo, mousse or hairspray :-)

Unfortunately my current hairdresser used to be at a salon within 15 minute walk of my home, but she moved late last year ................. and it now takes me 3 or 4 buses to get to her ................. or have OH drive me over there, a 30 minute drive.

Not sure how much longer I will keep on doing that!

The only tip I give my 'hairdresser' is - go to a hairdresser, or have another glass of wine!!!

I had a really good trainee hairdresser - but she qualified and moved on.
Next time I went, I had a bad cut that cost me a fotune, (£60) and, as I usually wear my hair in a French plait, turned under, was amazed that she woudn't / couldn't put it up for me. I did it in 3 minutes, whilst waiting to pay.

Since then, I've grown my hair, and occasionally cut my own fringe - or ask my sister after a glass or two of plonk!!

Even then, she's better than many hairdressers who charge £45 :-|

I'm the same as Jane and Andysmum don't tip my hairdresser as it's the boss that cuts my hair, I do give the girl/boy that shampoos my hair a tip if they are any good.

Over here, the law is price shown + all applicable taxes

whether that is for a meal, hairdresser, buying clothes, plane or train tickets, or buying a car.

The only exception I can think of is taxi fare ............ the fare that shows on the meter is the fare you pay. The taxes are included in the base price charged for mileage and waiting, as well as in the flag fare (ie, that which shows on the meter as soon as you step into the cab).

When VAT first replaced Purchase Tax, having to pay it on services, as well as goods, was a new thing, so many places, like restaurants, didn't show it on their prices.

The public didn't like this at all, so after a while it was made law that the price shown was the price paid. I had a very cheap meal once because the menu had a mis-print!!

Gosh, your tipping in the UK is low!!

here in Canada ........................ tipping for almost everything in most geographic areas is 15-20%

In the Greater Vancouver area (and possibly also Toronto Montreal, etc), it is more often 20-25%

OH usually tips taxi drivers about 10-15%

I always tip my hair dresser ............ $2-3 for a $14 shampoo and cut ........

......... I go to an el cheapo place that specialises in cuts, but she can handle my very fine hair whereas even top-flight very expensive places cannot do that..

Both Canada and the US have taxes added at the cash register, unlike the UK, Australia, etc .................. so you always have to be aware that the price on the item will be higher when you pay for it.

I'm so used to that now, that I get confused in the UK when no-one asks me for more money!

we also always tip in Australia, at about 10-15% ............. and literally no-one has ever turned it back on us.

I think my barber is having an affair with the woman who owns the pie shop next door. He's in and out of there all the time. And he's always taking her bags of something.

Andy'smum....service charges annoy me too, infact they don't get a tip if that is added!!

I was always told that you tip the employees but never the owner. So my hairdresser doesn't get a tip because she owns the place.

I have watched other customers and as far as I can tell, nobody tips, so I don't feel guilty.

In restaurants, usually 10%. The ones that annoy me are the ones with a "Service Charge" added to the bill, so you have no choice.

In Canada, we got very confused, as everything seemed to have 2 different sales taxes added on. I had to do lots of mental arithmetic before I bought anything!!

Some interesting posts:))

WiseChild....love yours.. :-)

l used another hairdresser about 2 months ago....£27....but she did'nt stop talking and l did'nt like the cut, pleasant enough though

The newest in town was £40, probably more now, brilliant service as in coffee and attention, but no better at cutting than the others.
My new one worked for Vidal Sassoon and is a teacher in hairdressing, not that means she's good, but l'm pleased anyways:))
l'll defo go again:)

I don´t tip because my hairdresser has been taking lessons from Easyjet.
Basic charge for cut & blow dry.
Extra for 2 shampoos, extra for conditioner, extra for mousse, extra for hairspray.
By the time he´s finished, the original price has nearly doubled.
I only go to him because he is my landlord´s brother, although I was unaware of that when I first went to him.
Must admit, he does a nice cut, even though he is well into his 70s. Much better than his son who does what he wants & not what you ask for.
So a tip????? definitely not.

I am asking anyone who is being coiffed.

I reckon if I get the banter and lingo correct I could be a fine coiffeurator.

that's what hairdressers usually ask isn't it? though mine doesn't - we set the world to rights and tell each other jokes
