Good blog that Pat. It looks like it is the lack of seaweed that has changed the taste.

So, we're all agreed...............Bring back the seaweed, or we won't buy! :-|

I love Ayrshire New Potatoes and Jersey Royal Potatoes, just washed and cooked in their skins with a sprig of fresh mint and served with a dollop of real butter.

Since I moved down here in 1988 I have not been able to find any local stockist of Ayrshire New Potatoes, as for Jersey Royals - I think they have lost some of their flavour over recent years.

I quite like the Jersey Royals.
I think they do a marvelous job.
Particularly that Harry.
Some leave a bad taste.

I sent my Welsh cousins a food parcel in March.
It was packed with potatoes.

I am so glad to see this thread as I have had the same oppion as most of you. I don't buy them now as I think they taste different too.

I would much rather have a nice Charlotte potato cooked in it's skin now than a Jersey Royal.

Mo**isons had them in a very small packet this week for a £1 and they were very small but I was not tempted because of the lost of flavour.

They were also always kidney shape, well a couple may be when you see them in the shops.

You could rub the skin off with your fingers and they seem more white in colour now than the soft yellowy colour they used to be and are not now,

Try yr local green grocer rather than the supermarket.
They are just fine.

Some friends who live in Jersey admit that the Royals are not as tasty as they once were.

Sent hubby out to buy some for a salad......and although I've told him in the past not to buy cheap ones.......HE DID JUST THAT :-S

I have to agree with all of you about new potatoes they are NOT what they used to be , I can remember putting on weight in the summer months over eating new potatoes in past because they were so delicious. :-D......not anymore :-S

One wee bit of interest may be...A few years ago I left some to sprout and planted them they came up just like ordinary pots. soo disappointed thought I would have loads of lovely Jersey's . Think it must be that most of the Jersey's (at least used to be) were grown near the sea plus the seaweed which gave it the "Taste" and (do correct me if I'm wrong which no doubt you will lol! :-S ) I had heard that they are growing them on higher ground now so not so near the sea and less taste? Think I might be rambling on..sorry

The only ones I have had in the last few years that were any good were ones bought in local market in Cornwall.

I think the EU Banned the use of seaweed some time ago.Shame on them. :-(

Just back from doing my shopping in Orpington, my regular green grocer's market stall had some Cornwall new potatoes, they looked quite nice, so I have bought some to see what they taste like ;-)

Hope your Cornish potatoes taste good OFITG.
Im going to look for some Cheshires which used to be rather nice.

We had some Nichola new pots last night and they were tasty. I did them in the micro just washed in water in a pyrex dish and lid. added butter just before they were cooked and gave them a swirl and they were fine.

Don't you also think that the JR's in the shops now are whiter in colour to what they used to be?

Had some last week. NOT impressed, very little taste.

As we live in Yorks and buy veg from local market I managed to get some Boston new spuds yesterday which, deluscious as ever. They grown in Boston, Lincs area and flavour is derived from the local soil. Worth trying IF you can get hold of some

Funny you should say that , Ronald. When we lived in Hartlepool, we could buy Lincoln new potatoes, but we can't in Norfolk! Our more local ones come from Suffolk. Seems that new potatoes migrate North!

Now eating less potatoes than ever because of the lack of taste, now we eat more pasta, we tried some Jerseys last week and they just had no taste it was like eating hot snowballs urgh......... tasteless, sorry Jersey farmers wont be buying them again
