Some friends who live in Jersey admit that the Royals are not as tasty as they once were.

Try yr local green grocer rather than the supermarket.
They are just fine.

I am so glad to see this thread as I have had the same oppion as most of you. I don't buy them now as I think they taste different too.

I would much rather have a nice Charlotte potato cooked in it's skin now than a Jersey Royal.

Mo**isons had them in a very small packet this week for a £1 and they were very small but I was not tempted because of the lost of flavour.

They were also always kidney shape, well a couple may be when you see them in the shops.

You could rub the skin off with your fingers and they seem more white in colour now than the soft yellowy colour they used to be and are not now,

I sent my Welsh cousins a food parcel in March.
It was packed with potatoes.

I quite like the Jersey Royals.
I think they do a marvelous job.
Particularly that Harry.
Some leave a bad taste.

I love Ayrshire New Potatoes and Jersey Royal Potatoes, just washed and cooked in their skins with a sprig of fresh mint and served with a dollop of real butter.

Since I moved down here in 1988 I have not been able to find any local stockist of Ayrshire New Potatoes, as for Jersey Royals - I think they have lost some of their flavour over recent years.

So, we're all agreed...............Bring back the seaweed, or we won't buy! :-|

Good blog that Pat. It looks like it is the lack of seaweed that has changed the taste.

Mine were loose from Morrisons and I tried to pick the smaller ones, but as you say ,a lot of them were big...they weren't green, but I can see that it might be the seaweed tat gave them the special taste.

No Jersey Mids were just that a bit larger but not as big as the Royals and the Nips were really tiny

So we got
Jersey Royals - mixed sizes but not as large as regular spuds
Jersey Mids - more selected to be a more standard mid size new spud
And Jersey Nips - the really small ones

Different sizes and names seemed to disappear with the growing trade with the Supermarkets and their obsessive desire for standardising all they sold. :-)

Priced in Morrisons at £4 a bag (a kilo), I refused to buy them. Much cheaper but still expensive a few days later I bought some but wish I hadn't -They were tasteless!!!

Just had some. Tasteless :-(

Like everyone else, I used to love the taste of those little potatoes - hot or cold - but it's definitely no longer there. Didn't know about the seaweed though - that's an interesting thought.....

Also the awful weather of the last few years has seriously affected the flavour of all roots veg.....

Who remembers the Jersey Nips - they were the really tiny ones. Mum & I loved them....

GinN

GinN Report 6 Jun 2013 19:12

I definitely don't think they taste like they used to, and as Pat says, this could be that the farmers can no longer use seaweed. The ones I've seen seem so large, too - I struggle to find small ones that you don't need to cut up.
Also, Aldi were selling some for 69p a bag, and they were all green!

Nolls from Harrogate

Nolls from Harrogate Report 6 Jun 2013 19:08

Definitely not like they used to be but...............do you not think they are much bigger than they used to be is it the bigger they are the less taste?? are they growing them bigger on purpose to sell less pots per pound and get more money?? just a thought. If as PatinCyprus says they are not using seaweed well is that not where they got their taste from ? :-|

PatinCyprus

PatinCyprus Report 6 Jun 2013 18:59

Heard this on the radio the other day. The Jersey farmers can no longer put seaweed on the soil for potatoes to fertilise it.
