Thank you Pamela for your explanation....
I agree the supermarkets have a lot to answer for.
It's the same with most things...all to do with price competition.
Interesting to find how the Jersey vodka turns out.

Will try some Cornish potatoes if they have them in my nearest M&S :-)

Sorry to hear/read your comments on Jersey Royals. I live in Jersey and we used to grow these potatoes for export until we retired about 10 years ago. I still sell some for a friend who is still in the business and his crop has the original taste and all his are grown using seaweed (which does make a difference to the taste).
Unfortunately your major supermarkets are no longer interested in quality only quantity and how low a price they can buy them for. This now means the local farmers can no longer afford the time to wait for the crop to mature properly (i.e the potato is white because it isn't mature) or use seaweed which is expensive to collect and spread.
This has been a funny year weather wise for potatoes as the frost and then the large amount of snow we had disrupted the growing potatoes resulting in an early crop that produced very small pots and the later ones only produced one or two bigger pots.
The supermarkets now control the size of the product too so the very small potatoes are no longer allowed to be shipped and in fact the bigger ones are dumped as the supermarkets don't want those either. (The making of Jersey Potato Vodka is currently being trialed using the bigger pots.)
There is no longer an open market for the sale of Jersey Royals and most of the crop now goes directly to your major supermarkets so if you buy them anywhere else then there is no quarantee that you are buying a Jersey Royal.

Most of the so called 'Jersey Royals' aren't the real thing at all.

They masquerade under the supplier having Jersey Royal somewhere in their name. Look for the variety. In many cases it isn't quoted or if it is, it is something completely different.

A big scam really so as they say, Buyer Beware.

Funny you should say that , Ronald. When we lived in Hartlepool, we could buy Lincoln new potatoes, but we can't in Norfolk! Our more local ones come from Suffolk. Seems that new potatoes migrate North!

Had some last week. NOT impressed, very little taste.

As we live in Yorks and buy veg from local market I managed to get some Boston new spuds yesterday which, deluscious as ever. They grown in Boston, Lincs area and flavour is derived from the local soil. Worth trying IF you can get hold of some

We had some Nichola new pots last night and they were tasty. I did them in the micro just washed in water in a pyrex dish and lid. added butter just before they were cooked and gave them a swirl and they were fine.

Don't you also think that the JR's in the shops now are whiter in colour to what they used to be?

Just back from doing my shopping in Orpington, my regular green grocer's market stall had some Cornwall new potatoes, they looked quite nice, so I have bought some to see what they taste like ;-)

One wee bit of interest may be...A few years ago I left some to sprout and planted them they came up just like ordinary pots. soo disappointed thought I would have loads of lovely Jersey's . Think it must be that most of the Jersey's (at least used to be) were grown near the sea plus the seaweed which gave it the "Taste" and (do correct me if I'm wrong which no doubt you will lol! :-S ) I had heard that they are growing them on higher ground now so not so near the sea and less taste? Think I might be rambling on..sorry

Sent hubby out to buy some for a salad......and although I've told him in the past not to buy cheap ones.......HE DID JUST THAT :-S

Farm F@@DS 80p :-S

Threw them all away....... he wont be doing potato shopping again.

I have to agree with all of you about new potatoes they are NOT what they used to be , I can remember putting on weight in the summer months over eating new potatoes in past because they were so delicious. :-D......not anymore :-S
