I think my favourites were the Arthur Ransome series, although I also enjoyed many of the others mentioned. I had forgotten "The Wind on the Moon" which I liked and the "Lone Pine" books, which I didn't.

The first adult book I read, aged about 11, was a murder called "Prussian Blue" where the victim was an artist who died because of a habit of sucking the end of a paint brush to make a point. It obviously made an impression because I was always very careful, in Art lessons, not to get paint anywhere near my mouth!!

chris my grandmother gave me A Peep behind the scenes many years ago and I too cried. Btw your picture reminds me of my grandmother so much, i had to do a double take when i first saw it!

Great thread mau, enjoying reading and seeing many other books i too read as a child.I suppose the lion, witch and the wardrobe was a firm favourite as i read it several times. Would have loved to have been able to walk through the back of my wardrobe, we pretended to do that when we were small lol

Mole in 'Wind in the Willows'. I love the river, and would have loved to have had Ratty as my friend, although I think he would have intimidated me a bit!!!!!

I didn't realise that Girls Crystal went on as late as that.
The comic/ magazine was only a small size...not as big as your usual comic
I did get the Annuals though.

A hard life Chrissie and Rosalie was dying, a sad read for a child... :-(.....could almost be about my Grandmother's life...travelling actors playing melodramas. :-(

I loved Peep behind the Scenes, a book my nan gave me.

I cried at the tough life little Rosalie had. Even now from time to time I get the book out and read it again.

Glad thread has inspired you to download Katy books :-D I think it might be a good idea to search for our old favourites to see how we'd like them now we're grown up :-D

I liked the Lone Pine Series by Malcolm Saville.

Also a series of books by Ronald Welch about the Carey family, who started off in the Welsh Marches if I remember correctly. The stories took place at various points in history, the hero was always a male Carey, and there was never any soppy romance to get in the way of a good tale.

They were children's books which I got out of the local library, but I noticed my mother always read them too!

Liked Captain W E Johns' Biggles series and his sci fi series - had a bit of a crush on Vargo the Martian.

Also loved the Little Women and What Katy did series. In fact, have been inspired by this thread to go and download the free copies of the 3 Katy Books I had read as a child, plus the two I didn't know about 'Clover' and 'In the High Valley', onto my Kindle. :-)

Enid Blyton was a good story teller wasn't she?

An announcer on our local radio this morning told us about an exhibition at N/Castle this week of Blyton's books.She wrote 800, and they are still being sold world wide,but said, with some non pc words etc.'adjusted' because of the age we now live in :-S

I loved Enid Blytons famous five books.

My foster mum in WW2 had lots of Just William books and Billy Bunter .the owl of the remove which were illustrated and I read these books over and over.
After WW2 I would visit every Easter and for a month in the summer Holidays and I reread those books over and over,

Auntie would send me a new year annual every Christmas and an Enid Blyton just 5 book .

It was from her that i got my love of reading.


Mind you later ,when it became available i just had to read Lady Chatterley,s lover ,very risque at the time .

I've read "The curious incident ....good book. The play, from the book, is on in the West End Maggie and Luke Treadaway who played Christopher won best actor in Olivier awards.

I remember reading Mam's 'Peyton Place' and feeling very daring lol

Writing the above has reminded me, my daughters, especially the eldest, always wanted to read my Tom Sharpe books, but I wouldn't let them, because the covers were a wee bit risque. They were on the top shelf.
Once the eldest turned 14, I let her - only to find both of them had been sneaking them away and had read most of them!!! :-|
