A man has been arrested after 11 people were hurt in a series of "hit and run" car accidents in the Welsh capital Cardiff.

The casualties, which included children, were taken to the city's University Hospital of Wales.

The accident and emergency department was only dealing with those injured in the crashes, and it was closed to other admissions.

There were reportedly around five different crashes in the Ely and Leckwith areas.

Police were at a number of locations including Crossways Road, Cowbridge Road West, Grand Avenue, and Sloper Road, and have advised motorists to avoid the areas.

The ages and conditions of those injured have not been confirmed.

Police said there were "a number of casualties" and witnesses said they saw "at least seven ambulances" in the Ely area.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested and a van was seized

A & E at the University Hospital is closed to all cases other than the crash victims

drugs/drink? no doubt we'll find out in the fullness of time, but to deliberately drive a vehicle at people, including lots of children displays a very sick mind indeed - air ambulances were used to take the victims to hospital

A woman of 32 killed and 11 injured - no statement yet about extent of any of the injuries.

Listening to eye witnesses tonight on news, some of those injured will be in a bad way.

If somebody is a coward and has a grievance, cars are an easy weapon. Guns in America, but not so easy to get them here. But cars are easy. And he drove through highly populated areas of Cardiff. Just imagine what damage he could have done in Culverhouse Cross shopping centre :-( :-(

latest update

A woman has been killed and 11 others injured – including seven children – in a series of hit and run crashes in Cardiff.

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man in the wake of the collisions, which occurred at six different locations in the Ely and Leckwith areas.

Superintendent Julian Williams from South Wales Police said the man was arrested while driving a white flat-bed truck.

He remains in custody at Cardiff Bay police station on suspicion of murder.

"Whether the actions were deliberate or reckless is a matter for the inquiry and the person will obviously be spoken to," Supt Williams said.

Family members of the 32-year-old woman who died have been informed.

Supt Williams said the fatality occurred at Cowbridge Road West, outside a fire station.

"Our thoughts are obviously with her family. Our family liaison officers are with the family at the moment," Supt Williams said.

Those injured - including seven children and four adults - have been taken to the city's University Hospital of Wales.

Their condition remains unknown.

Still nothing, I am going to try and sleep.

I just hope she was out and her mobile had no battery charge left.

I am concerned because she would have been walking home from work about that time.

Supercrutch - the deceased woman's name has been released. Give the police a ring if you are still concerned but I am sure that there is a perfectly reasonable explanation so don't worry unnecessarily x
