Thanks Gwynne, will look at Baddesly and Upton house And, no we have not been to Kenilworth (I have an OH who prefers NT - membership paid by me) or free, or Westonbirt Arboretum/Batsford arboretum (membership paid for by me) when not on holiday. If on holiday he will happily pay entrance, no he isn't really stingy, just prefers not to have to pay too much out :-D We have been to warwick castle though.

Thanks for the links Gwynne

Beautiful building but the coach not my cup of tea, I'll probably like it better when nature has done its thing with it. :-D

I wouldn't have thought Baddesley would have been much further than Coughton, Ann. It's well worth a visit. Near to us are Packwood and Charlecote but neither are very special, although interesting. Packwood has yew trees in a formation called "The Sermon on the Mount".

I expect you've been to Kenilworth Castle, that's lovely.

Nearer to you is another favourite of ours Upton House with a wonderful Art Deco bathroom

Other than those I think we've both been to the same places - we aren't that far apart.

Off to work now to pay for the petrol for tomorrow's jaunt.

AnninGlouc - g.dau is about 26 - first took her when she was about 7 and we had been there before that.

I had never heard of it and picked up a leaflet in the local library. G.dau fascinated by a conversation she had with one of the ladies about the waste of putting carpets on the floor and not on the wall and taking her portrait with a magic box(camera)!

Have just googled 'parish rowner 1642' and they have a website now.

Gwynne, Coughton Court is probably the furthest we'd drive from here, but how much further would it be to Baddesly, and are there any other places we should be considering in your direction?

I revisit the places I love again and again, and more some. If daily, I could just pass by, St Pauls Cathedral, Millennium bridge, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, St Pancras Station and, and .....I'd be a happier woman than I already am :-D

Anyone got a link to an image?

Wend, I do other things too :-D :-D

Art/Paintings hold no interest to me at all,,,,,,I wouldnt know good from bad,Rubens from Gainsboro,,,,though I do reconise Monet flowers that are on many things.

Ironbridge and Beamish are different as its a step back in time to the era of our not too distants relatives everyday lives, one which we find them in on the census,

The V&A is a place full of interest to everyone and so educational ,,,,,just a lovely place, trips down memory lane if you wish or delve back even more if you choose...

I'm with you, Ann, I like to visit those close enough in all the seasons to see the gardens changing.

Baddesley gets dressed up for Christmas with candle light in all the rooms and traditional decorations. It looks beautiful.

I like to revisit places because you can never take everything in at one go. I always see something different, that applies equally to houses, castles, scenery, gardens and especially paintings.

What I really don't understand is those people, and sadly it is usually women, who walk round NT properties chatting to each other and not even really looking at where they are. :-S

Guinevere Report 17 Oct 2012 16:24

Well, Merlin, our *only* purpose in going to Bexhill (and spending money there on food and drink, plus a donation) was to visit the Pavilion, I'm guessing we can't be the only people who visit and spend money just for that. So it brings money into the town.

We saw the art work you mention and thought it was a lot of fun - it didn't cost ratepayers a penny, Eddie Izzard sponsored it and we really enjoyed it. Art can be fun.

What a shame that some of the local people don't appreciate the pavilion, the ones we spoke to love it. 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ', I suppose, but I hardly think you can call prize-winning Art Deco design rubbish.

Merlin, re your post 13.20, I didn't say a word! I've never visited the De La Warr Pavilion. Think I should though and then I can pop in for tea at the Merlin Mansion :-D

Whilst I have enjoyed visits to Stately houses like Chatsworth, Blenheim Palace, Stoke in Bucks and others, I always enjoy walking round the grounds most of all. In fact, if I can, I like to sit and get my paints out.

I remember sitting in a field a short distance from Arundel Castle, quite a few years ago, on a lovely summer's day painting the Castle in the distance. Blissful! I also painted the lake in Capability Brown's beautifully landscaped Petworth Park, while 'im indoors played cricket there. Any excuse not to watch cricket!!

The museum and art gallery in my hometown of Brighton is always interesting. Also the Royal Pavilion, but I only visit that when we have visitors these days.

Would love to visit Edinburgh and that is on my 'to do' list.

We should all do what we enjoy most - did you know that Island watches clouds when she's not crocheting her beautiful creations :-D

Sharon, I've been meaning to ask you - did the cuttings you took of the wild creeper take?

Malcolm

Malcolm Report 17 Oct 2012 16:05

I can understand Sharrons attitude. It's a matter of what you think you need or don't think you need. I used to love science and hate history. I couldn't see the point of "looking at old stuff".

Later in life I learned that "Old stuff" teaches us lessons about "Now".

Just to say i've visited Beamish Open Air Museum must be about 8 times over the years since it first opened in 1972....it's always changing because of old buildings/items being found and rebuilt on site.

So interesting and well worth another visit:-)

Island

Island Report 17 Oct 2012 14:18

I guess those who re-visit must do so because they enjoy it or didn't get to see everything on previous visits.
Some things are just really interesting.

Well the bit I never understand is why people go to the same place again and again ...must be a bit like watching repeats on the telly , once you have seen it .well you have seen it .

I like art galleries and museums ...up to a point....but I do understand that when you go on a tour of one of these stately homes you are shown what they want you see.
7 years ago we went in the Hermitage in St Petersburg and the opulence in there upset me as I was amazed at how the ordinary people still live....the gold and expensive hangings, paintings, etc.and going back in the coach saw some hovels.

The same thing happened in Granada in Spain, went to an old monastery and it was dripping in gold...there was such a divide between the rich and poor.

Give me the old castles in Wales and archaeological digs...then you're really talking history and imagining what life was like instead of it being restored to someone's idea of what it was like.

I do like to see good old paintings though...but some modern art leaves me cold.
