Is anyone else getting up for sunrise on Wednesday morning to see the planet Venus transit across the face of the sun? I shall be there, weather permitting, to photograph the event for posterity. Not a good forecast, though. I'll post the photos if it is clear enough to actually see the sun.

I wonder what the astrologers will make of this, with the awesome combined gravitational effect of venus aligned with the sun? Scary to think of the effect it will have on anyone unlucky enough to be born at the peak of the transit.

We get sunrise here about 20 minutes after you, so if I could be bothered I'd be the last to see it;-)

what time is sunrise? I don't really do mornings - don't think I was born at the peak of anything much - in a bed in Cardiff somewhere many moons ago and it was midday - cos I don't do mornings as I said

sometime before 9 oclock, methinks........in that case, i'll missit!

Hope to be awake in time. Good programme on BBC1 about it tonight.

Its actually a great example of science versus stupid. Astronomers all over the world will be observing the event and learning things about the composition of the atmosphere of venus, the speed of the orbit and applying this knowledge to the search for planets and life elsewhere in the universe. A good example of progressive learning.

Astrologers, however, miss out on the chance to record the births that occur at exactly the same time and chart the lives of those so born. Or taking the example of people born at the same time and seeing how the transit affects them. They dont do it because they know its such a load of rubbish.

No, instead they tell us that we will have a change in our love lives and that despite being the most important event for years, the best they can do is to predict the fulllfilment of the cheyenne rattlesnake prophecy. And people believe this stupidity! They really do!

I look forward to seeing your pics but the forecast for tomorrow here is dire.

I know, its annoying after ive made a solar filter and done all the preparation. Stll, theres a slight chance but got to admit that it is slim.

I haven't got the glasses or equipment to look at it...so I'm also relying on your pics.

If we are lucky we might just spot Venus. No clouds or rain etc.

Why wouldn't an astrologer study the influence of the transit if they so wished. They wouldn't have to get up at the crack of dawn to study this, they would be getting their beauty sleep and I am sure Venus would be all in favour of this.-jl

Thats sort of my point. They dont study anything because its all crackpot stupid nonsense and theres nothing to study. Not that any of them would know what a planetary nebula looked like if it hit them in the face. :-D

The best that can be said is that they provide me with some amusement so its not all bad. Downside is that some people actually think its got some meaning. Mostly harmless and its only themselves they harm, but its sad to see otherwise intelligent people falling for such stupidity and all for the want of a bit of critical thinking. Its this sort of gullibility and suspension of disbelief that permeates society and creates problems in all sorts of areas.

I look forward to the headline that says 'astrologer wins lottery'. I predict it wont happen :-D :-D :-D

Clouds prevented anyone up here seeing it, sadly. But thanks to the wonders of science, it was well documented.

Predictable maybe. But never, not once in the history of the world, has any astrologer ever been able to explain how or why it works. Theres two reasons for that. The main one being that it doesnt work and the second one being that they dont know.

You cant get much more consistently predictable than that! :-D :-D :-D
