Morning all,

well I can't see any BBQ's happening here as the weather has turned
cold and looks like we are in for a lot of rain tomorrow which is no
surprise to me as I'm at hairdresser tomorrow :-|
had to put on the heating last night would you believe :-S :-S

aw i love bbq's, everything about having one is fun fun fun,

a good old get together,

altho i do not see the point of gas ones, ya may as well cook the food int he kitchen n carry it outside lol,

my brand spanking new barbie is due to be delivered tomorow

Hya Emma . my brother & family love them .have everyone round to there garden .they have one every Sunday .grandchildren .& all have a great time I.love eating outside when its nice .but cook inside. not a BBQ fan .The problem was were we used to live in England BBq came out & the booze it went on some nights till 2-3am .not a kill joy .but it did spoil it for folks who lived either side of them .Regards Barbra x

Just had an e.mail from my sis in Pennsylvania, they still have their Weber and BIL cooked a leg of lamb on it for the family on the weekend.
They were always BBQing SA ,but the weather where they are now is similar to ours.
It just tastes different somehow, whether it is coals or gas.. we don't use fuel to light ours ( sorry !!!..hubby doesn't, he's the cook and I checked with him )

Reading this has set me thinking. I'm no Gordon or Heston or Delia etc but I take pride in the food I cook. I also do buffets and bake. Do you think that many people just expect bbq food to be overcooked and burnt to a frazzle? And if so, do they just put up with it?

On the more personal side, we've never been in a position to be very sociable in our own home before. But now hubby and I are getting stuck into all the stuff that we could never do and making our garden somewhere to hold gatherings is part of that plan. So hopefully we are going to be having our first bbq sometime in August. I can't imagine providing yukky stuff to eat. Just because it will be cooking outside is no excuse for crappy food.

I am hoping that you'll be giving me lots of hints and recipes.

And if you want to pop over to Shirley in the West Midlands you will be welcome. :-D

Charcoal flavoured Sausages,Burgers,steaks,chicken legs,etc.very appetising (Not) and the stink of the said burnt offerings,YUK.they should be fined for causing environmental damage and annoying the Neighbours. :-S :-S :-S

Best thing about gas barbeques is that the heat is almost instant. And properly cooked sausages should not be burnt on the outside and raw in the middle. It is just bad cooking to serve them like that.

If cooking chicken I always flash cook it in the microwave for five minutes to avoid it being undercooked but everything else is cooked complateley on the barbie and I am fanatical about things not cooked properly. (I do eat my steaks rare though).

This thread reminds me of when we were with friends in Kings Park,Perth.
We are not big fans of BBQs here at home,but in Aussieland they really know how to use them,and food tastes soo good outdoors.
The best part was when we didn't have to clean the stoves.....just covered them over. We were told they were cleaned next day by the authorities........now that's what I call a BBQ ;-) :-D

love prawns and veg bbq not a burger and sausage person.

specky was supposed to be bbq some piri piri pork but by the time i had a massive salad done they coals wernt ready so grilled in kitchen

we have a huge family gas bbq just getting hid down the botom of garden must advertise for free cycle.

Unless it's a 'proper' BBQ, i.e. wood chips and hickory, then it just doesn't do it for me. I can't stand the smell (or taste) of fuel, burgers, sausages that are burnt on the outside and raw in the middle. A BBQ should be out in the open, on a lovely beach or a clearing in the woods, not in back gardens where neighbours are on top of each other. We eat outside sometimes, but I cook it in the kitchen!!

We eat outside a lot here. We do have a gas BBQ but it is to much like hard work cleaning up afterwards. Now we use a Teflon coated electric hotplate that we plug in outside. Fat drains down into a container so easy to clean, It is about 30cm x 50cm so you can get quite a lot of food on it and they are very reasonably priced too.

Sylvia - I remember the whole aisle full of different types of bbq beads in supermarkets in the US. Most people we knew there had bbqs at home they used in summer - too cold in Minneapolis in winter!

BBQ'ing is also a way of life here in Canada.


I also wonder what you're doing to your bbq's in the UK.

We still use a charcoal bbq ................ the smell wafts over to the neighbours, but the smoke has dissipated before it reaches our fence!


Canadians like the smell and taste of charcoal bbq'd food so much that you can actually buy cedar chips and patented "bbq smoke" to use on your gas bbq :-D



I know some people (and know of many more) who use their bbq all year round ........ even in snow

I'd almost forgotten this story...

Friends of ours went away for a weekend, stayed in a lovely cabin next to a lake, beautiful setting.

They joined other people to bbq dinner, everyone commented on how nice the place was, looked after very well.

Later, everyone was sitting chatting, enjoying a cool drink or two, watching the sun go down over the lake............ then the possums came out of the trees....... and licked the bbqs clean!

We have a gas bbq (like most Aussies). In summer most of our food is cooked on the bbq (OH's job) so I just have to make a salad.

BBQ is great for cooking fish, keeps the smell outside.

I don't like the smelly bbqs either!

Have just returned from a barbeque. It was a gas bbq and there was no smell. Nothing different that could not be cooked in the kitchen but it meant that we were altogether. Very nice. No booze for me though as I was driving.
Sat round the ?chimanea afterwards. Lovely and warm but it did smoke
