tv? didn't get one until I was about 9.

It was DAD'S tv, we weren't allowed to touch it :-P

I must be getting old because I cannot remember rushing home to watch tv, maybe because childrens tv was on in the afternoon while I was usually at school. The wooden tops, Andy Pandy, Rag tag and Bobtail along with many others too long ago to remember. It seems to be all about quantity these days rather than quality :-) :-)

Janet Report 9 Apr 2012 11:40

.......this is why I can't remember rushing home from school in 1956.......

Blue Peter was first aired on 16 October 1958. It had been commissioned to producer John Hunter Blair by Owen Reed, the head of children's programmes at the BBC, as there were no programmes in existence that catered for children aged between five and eight. Reed got his inspiration after watching Children's Television Club, the brainchild of former radio producer, Trevor Hill, who created it as a successor to his programme Out of School, broadcast on BBC Radio's Children's Hour; Hill networked the programme from BBC Manchester and launched it aboard the Royal Iris paddle steamer on Merseyside with presenter Judith Chalmers welcoming everyone aboard at the bottom of the gangplank........jl

I was about 9 when we first got a TV and early days it was on for things like What's My Line and The Groves Family in the evenings.

I don't remember watching it on weekdays after school, but Sunday teatime ish we used to wait for the next part of a serial such as David Copperfield or my favourite one, -The Silver Sword. I remember worrying whether the children would ever be reunited with their parents.

I must have been 12 before we had a TV but I do remember rushing in to listen to children's hour on the radio. Loved Ballet shoes and Just William. Then when a bit older, Dick Barton.

and Paul Temple on the radio

We had TV for the coronation - our house was full that day - we were the nly one within miles who had one - my mother made sandwiches all day to feed the ever growing crowd

No programmes in the day time - started around 6:pm - What's my line with Gilbert Harding, Eammon Andrews, Ghislaine Alexander, Barbara Kelly and Lady Barnett who sadly committed suicide later

Always a sunday play which we watched - in the dark - interval long enough to make tea and sandwiches - interval usually a cat playing with a ball of wool, a potter's wheel or some swans floating on some water

there was a programme called Quite Contrary and then came the non PC Black and White Minstrel show!!!

Andy Pandy puppet show with Annette Mills - sister of John Mills
