Did you know that Oxfam send all their donated Bra's to Africa.

In some cases they are vital.....Teenage girls are less likely to be raped if they wear one. The men seem to think they are available if they don't wear one!! Its often a status thing too, it gives others the impression they can afford them .But more often then not they can't afford to buy underwear at all, so in some ares they are given free. In other area's the women set up stalls and sell them.

Oxfam has run this system for some time now 4 - 5 years, other charities do a simular thing. Check it out on the web sites..."Bra's for Africa" or "Oxfam & Bra's" etc.
Soo come on ladies sort your Bra's out and get them to Oxfam where they will be sent to the recycle centre and made very good use of....all year round.

Edit.....IF YOU do take any into an Oxfam shop. pleasae tell the staff it is for the Bra's project (which should run all year) and they go into the RAG BAGS. Some managers like to sell them in the shop where as some don't!!

I bought a couple of coselettes. you know, the all in one jobs at an outlet shop for a friend.

They were incorrectly labelled and did not fit her. Ideally, we would have liked to have given them to a charity who pass them to a woman whose back needed support but could not find one.

What we didn't want was to put them in a shop for some old perv to buy. But then again, I suppose old pervs need help as well.

Jude,
I didn't know about this, it's a great idea, we've got an Oxfam shop in our town, so will ask about donating. My daughter and I recently had a sort out of old unwanted bras, and they were going in the bin. luckily I've bagged them up. So thanks for that info. glad they'll hopefully be going to a good cause. (I just hate throwing anything away, especially clothes).
Best Wishes,

ShelleyRose x :-) :-)

Thanks ShellyRose:)

You may need to remind the shop to put the bra's into there rag bag, thats the one that gets sent for recycling :-) :-) :-)

Nearly every charity shop has old manual working sewing machines.
It seems a bit short -sighted not to send them to Africa, then they can manufacture their own underwear ?

Good point Lindsay....don't think we have any though, but l'll mention it to the manager, maybe there is a reason why they have'nt sent any!!

I used to run a charity shop, and there was always zips, buttons cottons that were pushed in a corner and inevitably scrapped that could have been sent and used.

I'm all for teaching people a skill to improve their own lives rather than just giving hand outs. although men will always rape given the opportunity, girls need to be educated how to be safe .
