I agree Merlin, I feel that it's a case of one rule for some people and a different one for the rest of society. There is no fairness.

AnninGlos Report 7 Dec 2011 16:35

I would think it is inadvisable to segregate the children as this will only encourage divisive thinking as adults. It is good for children of all races to mix and learn about the others' way of life and religions. The parents are wrong to complain - they probably think their children will be brain washed which shows what they'd do if it were them. And the school is wrong to abide by the complaints. Are Christian children allowed to opt out of similar things for other religions? I am puzzled as to why Muslim and other religions should opt to send their children to a church school if they don't want their children to fully participate.

I go along with Ann - why a church school for non-christians?

Sallie

Sallie Report 7 Dec 2011 18:57

I agree with both Ann and Chris.....why do the parents send their Non-Christian children to a Church school?

AnnCardiff Report 7 Dec 2011 19:00

I'd be outside the school with a large placard claiming discrimination against Christians - flippin' cheek - imagine this happening in a Muslim country - this sort of thing really does nothing for integration - and dare I say, wearing a veil or a burkha does nothing for integration either

I wonder how the Muslim parents feel about this - do they go along with it or do they think it is unfair

Its not new, when I was at school. JWs always opted out of assemblies where anything religious is being held Or anything to do with Christmas.

If children of other faiths want to be omitted from the fun of Xmas so be it. I was still happy for my kids to learn about other faiths. It gives a better tolerance of other peoples lives.

Cannot your grandchildren opt out of RE that includes teachings of other faiths if the parents wish it?

Don't really understand why any parent of a child who is not C of E or RC would choose to send their child to a faith school.

Rambling Report 7 Dec 2011 20:19

I think the reason why children of other faiths are sent to church schools is that there is, generally, a perception that faith schools are more disciplined, more likely to be 'good' schools.

Personally I don't see a problem. Everyone has a choice and as the school has accepted non-Christian children the head teacher/governors must have decided that the 'segregation' is workable ... presumably the Christian parents could ask that their children are not taught about other religions...but those children are not being 'disadvantaged' in any way...it is (if anyone) the Muslim children who are missing out on learning about the richness of other faiths... learning about them is an asset not a chore imo.

Having said all that, like Mildred when I was at sec' school, the Catholics (edit and JWs) took services seperately, and aside from a very basic mention Religious instruction lessons barely mentioned any other religion than Christianlty.

Bob I saw that article too and was absolutely gobsmacked to say the very least !!!

Dangerous territory when justice is dependent upon a persons religion/race.

I can only imagine the headline had the roles been reversed but it doesn't take away from the fact that the girl was viciously assaulted and justice hasn't been done ....disgusting. :-0

With one comment Bob you have turned this thread into an anti-Muslim thread. This was about Muslim children being exempt from Christian activities - and before you brand me one of PC brigade I do actually agree with Dizzi.

My comments weren't anti Muslim..(I know you weren't saying they were Sue but I feel I need to qualify them)....I don't give a nut about a persons religion or race........one law should fit all...and I'd be equally appalled had the attackers been agnostics (like me) and got away with it ...x
