She is in pain with her back and I have been trying to give her Tramadol and/or Diazepam but no matter how I disguise them she spits them out,and has bitten me twice (has never been a biter).

Any tips or hints gratefully received!

Are the tablets disolvable ? Perhaps you could syringe them down the throat? :-D.


Our late Springer was such a guts he would eat meds willingly...

We had to give our moggie thyroid tablets and the only way I found was to crush the tablet between two spoons and then mix the crumbs into a dollop of his favourite pate . Worked every time .

Thanks Susan.No, not disolvable I'm afraid. I am torn between being really sorry for her and her pain and angry because she wont take what will stop it!

Have you tried crumbling the pills into powder, and then mix it in with her favourite food.

Hopefully, that way she won't really notice the taste of it so much.

Shirley, the Tramadol is in capsule form so have tried sprinkling it between treats, then strong cheese which she loves, but she just gags and chokes at the first hint. Such a diva!

Hi BC .I have Tramadol for my dog .I just wrap it in a nice bit of ham ,hold it high up so his head is up and throat open and down it goes.I then follow it with just a plain bit of ham to make sure he swallows again.I don't have to put it in his mouth ,just say "look what Mummy's got " his head goes up and ready to snatch ,and down it goes .Bingo!!..Good luck. :-D :-D

I used to give my cat her tablets wrapped in a piece of liver, three or four normal pieces then the one with the tablet in, she had got used to the liver being 'normal' by then.

Now you need to sit her down and explain why she needs to take her meds, trying bringing it casually in to your daily discussions about life and things, always with a smile and stern expression.....alllow her to develop her own opinion and feed back to you why she doesnt want to take the tablets..... :-D

Oh BC don't open the capsule.I think it is so bitter and nasty.I tried doing that once :-S :-S.

cut a sausage in to 3 peices
and then pop the pills inside the sausage
worked everytime when i worked at the vets
failing that open the dogs mouth wide
pop the pills as far down as possile
and hold the nose up
while keeping the mouth shut till they are swalled

Have you tried worming a feral cat!!! She can tell straight away, whatever you do. Fighting a losing battle. Have used Stronghold drops on her, but they dont clear the worms.
Never had any trouble with the dogs, they would eat anything.
Dosing a cow is a bit difficult too. they are stronger than I used to be.

And whist you are having the above discussion, with smile and stern expression, remember this has to be done at eye level so as not to intimidate the poor diva!!

I have to give Chester a pill each morning .As soon as he hears the word 'Tablet' he runs straight to the fridge ........HAM!.He is well trained now BC lol

BC , if and when I have to give tablets to our dogs I always hide it in a nob of butter , it always works , I think it helps it to slip down easily .
Pets do get suspicious of pills , especially if there are a few failed attempts .
