Probably the recipe was rubbish.

Some cookery books do seem to contain recipes that are utter manure and I think many have misprints in them.

I always put a bit of semolina in shortbread.

hi sharon.
thanks for saying that, but it was prob me,
the recipe called for 6oz butter and 4 tablespoons of milt melted together over a warm heat and then added to the flour and caster suger,i admit it looked a little to moist when i rolled it out.x :-(

i can cook honest, but im better at savory dishes, cant make pastry to save my life..but can make a lovely manchester tart and rhubarb crumble...my scones could kill someone if thrown and my attempt at making a sponge cake nearly choked my hubby, why oh why cant i cook loverly light cakes and biscuits,do you think its because i didnt pay attension in domestic sience classes.(our class looked over to the football field, much more interested in the boys in their shorts, and im paying for it now .sob sob.) :-D
ps. sorry for the spelling mistake,i can spell attention, no excuse for that one.x :-D

That seems like a mighty odd recipe for shortbread. I have never melted anything together.

Don't think it was you at all.Try another recipe.

Hi Suzanne.....must be your recipe as shortbread is never made with liquid added. :-S

took it from a recipe book(thought it sounded strange, wait a min will go and get it......right here we go.6oz butter and 4 tablespoons milk, melt butter in the milk but do not over heat, that means warming it in a pan over a heat on the cooker?mix it into the flour andknead lightly, thats what i did. :-D

I agree, I make shortbread very successfully in the aga but have made it in the oven too. I never melt anything just rub in and knead the flour, butter and caster sugar together before spreading it all over the base of a tin. It's a mighty strange recipe!

I wonder if it's supposed to be a shortCAKE recipe rather than shortbread.

Perhaps Sue,but I always make shortcake with butter, selfraising flour and caster sugar.....binding ingredients together.....there are many variations of course :-)

whats the difference? its says petticoat tails, thats short bread isnt it?,
its the st michaels home baking book, published in 1979(my nan gave it to me yrs ago) :-D

lavender Report 25 Sep 2011 23:17

I would have thought that petticoat tails was just the pattern of the mould but I don't know either? St michaels have a lot to answer for!

I just dragged out my jelly strainer (I've only used it twice) it's painted metal. All the red paint was already peeling off. No wonder Lakelande are now making one in plastic - feel like I should have a refund but it's a couple of years old.
