http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1349915/Richard-Keys-Andy-Gray-present-tonights-big-match-Sky.html#comments

Controversially...I couldn't give a peanut what either bloke thinks...and from what I can gather it was said *off air* so they can say what they like as far as I'm concerned...........though I know that some are up in arms about it....I just think they've made themselves look daft...but i don't think they should lose their jobs over it.

BUT for the record...I DO know the offside rule and have done since i was about 5...despite *gasps* being a girl !!!!!!!!

What do you reckon? Should they get the sack? Was it right that they were suspended for the comments that they made?

Or are we in danger of going OTT when people hold unpopular opinions?

SueMaid Report 24 Jan 2011 21:06

No but then I haven't been trained to be a linesman. I saw the transcript of the comments and they were scathing:-( They have a right to their opinion but there are some comments that shouldn't be said in public.

Wend

I do, but he was too interested in football for my liking, so I dumped him!

EDIT - that reply was to 'Do you remember the date?' which has been deleted.

Hi Muffy :) I'm wavering on this one.

I typed out one reply and then some questions popped into my head.

I know you said they didn't make the comments on air, but were they made in work's time?

Does Sky have any sex discrimination/bullying and harassment policies and are they in breach of them?

They may be facing these disciplinary procedures because of these issues.

Wend

Wend Report 24 Jan 2011 23:27

They made the comments not realising they were 'on air', stupid boys!

ChAoTicintheNewYear

ChAoTicintheNewYear Report 24 Jan 2011 23:36

Yes, it is right that they were suspended. Comments like those should not be tolerated and to do nothing would be seen to be condoning sexist attitudes. Sexual discrimination is wrong and one of the ways of dealing with sex discrimination is to tackle attitudes such of those of these commentators.

Replace gender with race and see whether you think these comments, if made about Asians, for example, are acceptable.

I'm not saying anything more right now because I'm tired so am going to bed. If I remember tomorrow I may return and add a bit more when my thoughts are a little more coherent.

Night :-)

Edit: I'll admit, I don't know the offside rule but that is because I have no interest in football and not because I'm female.

i dnt think they should be fired, how many times have we made sexist remarks, i know i have, coz men just cant clean as good as women so there! lol,

they made remarks that wernt very nice but they wernt the worse thing that could have been said either, i dont like footbal, but i do know the offside ruke :D x

and it was a private conversation, they wernt on air, altho still miked, very silly but hey lets face it no one has died, x

Gender stereotyping works in reverse. My wife recently broke her thigh very badly. When I went to collect her from hospital after an eight day stay, the (female) nurse said to me, "you look well considering you have been living on pot noodles and fish and chips for over a week". In fact I am the cook in the house and also do ironing and other housework.

So don't just blame men for tarring all women with the same brush, it works the other way.

ps, I agree they should have been suspended.

I watch my 12 year old week in week out playing footy and I wouldnt know the offside rule if it waved at me accross the pitch. Im not sure of any of the other rules either. I think the ref makes them up as he goes along.Lol

Penny Report 25 Jan 2011 13:05

I'm not a qualified ref so no I dont

as someone above has said, if it was reworded so it was with ref to creed/race/skin colour we'd be sure they were wrong.

If they were at work and being paid, then yes, in exactly the same way as say a couple of nurses walking a hospital corridor would be held responsible for disparaging remarks about patient/Dr were overheard as the talked between themselves

Muffyxx

Muffyxx Report 25 Jan 2011 13:08

I just don't think what they said was anything worse than I've heard about men on the very few occasions I've watched Loose Women ...or from some Comediennes...Jo Brand springs to mind.

I just think it was a bit of banter between two blokes, and somebody decided it might be a little earner to leak it to the press. What would happen if everything said about Refs got in the paper,Writs would be issued Etc. **M**.

Conan

Conan Report 25 Jan 2011 13:50

Of course they should be sacked.

Not because of a few laddish remarks made in private ................... but because of their attitude.

Football's administrators, at every level, have long been working hard to roll the game out, and make it welcoming, to all sections of the community. Families, women, disabled, ethnic minorities etc, etc. One only has to compare the faces on the terraces today to the faces from 20 years ago to see how far they have come.

To that end the FA have enlisted the help of the full spectrum of football media ................. including Sky Sports.

These two jerks have just poured a very large bucket of cold water on all that has been achieved.

Their comments were made in private and should never have reached the public domain. But their employers should now be in no doubt that their attitude towards the aims of all those who promote football in this country does not qualify them for the jobs they are doing.

StrayKitten

StrayKitten Report 25 Jan 2011 13:51

i think the people who outed it should be suspended, as they certainly cant be trusted lol, x

According to the press today, this is not the first time these reporters have been in a pickle and are well known for their sexism. This time they overstretched themselves and the waiting axe has fallen.
