Are you paying for that Eddie?

If you can afford the flights , accommodation and tuition fees which I assume are cheaper than here, good luck to her :)

Janet, I'm pleased to say some young people are already going abroad to study. My youngest son is studying in Auckland in NZ having followed my eldest son out there.
With the new student fees ( and the absurd no early payback allowed clause!! ) fees are comparable to England it looks like my youngest daughter will also be heading "down under" to Aus or NZ.
She had set her heart on going to Downing, Cambridge to study (family) law (her second choice was medicine, probably in Edinburgh). England has almost certainly lost a very talented and caring young lady.
I've no doubt that there will be many many more talented people who will desert this wretched sinking ship for a better life elsewhere.

Janet Report 4 Nov 2010 10:59

Perhaps it may be time for the young people to think about going abroad to take their degree. I was listening to a programme about business study degrees in the Netherlands where all the lectures were in English. Just looking at their fees at present they appear to be £1421 per annum. Other advantages were the chance to learn another language, a chance to have a foot in the door at business opportunities in Europe as the student had already proved their confidence when moving out of their comfort zone here in England. There may be other degrees in English but this was the only one mentioned.
As for foreign students paying for the degrees over here, my daughter in law's father paid £12000 per annum for her to study here.
Regarding getting a degree..and work as a graphic designer, my daughter took 2 years after gaining her degree to find suitable work. However 12 years later she is still having to do courses to keep up with computer technology. Her boss has given up on trying to learn and leaves her to do the studying. In order to keep her job she has to continue to learn which she is finding harder each time the technology changes. So study doesn't finish with a degree.-Jle

They appear to delete quicky - I didn't have a chance to read what they'd written! The perils of going out to work!!
If it ain't worth reading - don't bl**dy write it!!!
Also - if you can't stand by what you've written - don't bother!

Sorry, I miss read...so we agree on that one!

And the person who has deleted has previously said that they 'tidy up' their posts after a while. Not that there was anything particuarly controversial, as far as I can recall. But it is that person's 'right' to do as they wish with their intellectual property :-0

Getting late Det - that is what I meant - I do not see why they should vote on english bills. We might save on expenses if they stayed the majority of the time in their own parliaments. They cost enough to erect (Wales and Scotland) Stormont was long ago.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 3 Nov 2010 22:59

I wouldn't go as far as that Chris of wessex, although I do feel that only the MPs representing English constituancies should be allowed to vote on Bills which *only* effect England.

ChrisofWessex

ChrisofWessex Report 3 Nov 2010 22:38

Not me but re subsidising I think to a degree we do - what I should like to see is N. Ireland, Wales and Scotland have their own parliaments is that only those representing english constituencies sit at the Palace of Westminster.

I'd love to know who has been deleting. and why..especially after my posting of 19.43..?
Can't stand by what you say...?
I had the guts to say I was out of the debate..we're all British or within the UK.
But the deletions changed my mind.

The Welsh assembly has their allocation,as do the Scottish and English from the UK government and it is up to them how they then apply it!
The English do not subsidise the other countries within the UK.

Just googled gdau's old uni and there EU students are quoted same fees as British students. So why should we all be paying for free tuition for EU students in Scotland?

ChrisofWessex

ChrisofWessex Report 3 Nov 2010 21:57

Fees due to rise in 2012 according to news tonight. Re EU students not being charged for fees in Scotland - does vice versa apply?

:)

Advertising is one of those things isn't it?

How do you make your product stand out from a similar one...GR from Ancestry for example to the casual websurfer...or the tin of rice pud on the supermarket shelf.. which appeals most the one that says 'rice pud'...or the one that says 'rice pud' with a pretty picture of cows in the fields :)

As I used to sell childrens toys, I can say with some confidence that the brighter the packaging the better the sales, for eg a hammer ball set in a clear plastic bag did ok...stick it in a box with a picture of a child having fun playing with it...and it flew off the shelves .

Oops....
Here endeth my debate,
Whilst saying I thought that Wales , Scotland N Ireland and England should be treated the same within the UK, it is obvious that some either didn't read my view, or as English took exception to what I said ! Shame ! Sandie.

The term "graphic design" can also refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines that focus on visual communication and presentation.

Common uses of graphic design include identity (logos and branding), web sites, publications (magazines, newspapers, and books), advertisements and product packaging.

In other words without a graphic designer this website and every other would probably use a standard template without any individuality.

Does it need a degree course to be a graphic designer...no...does it need a degree course to enable the student to access the best and most efficient way to pursue their 'art', learn what can be done and progress and innovate from what has previously been done? ...more than likely.

Are employers more likely to consider employing a designer with a degree over someone without one ? yes.

DET,
Regarding the fees going up if you're already at University.

I expect it will only apply to new students - they can't introduce it retrospectively.
I was in the second year when they lowered the amount earned before the loan had to be paid back, but it didn't affect me.

The sooner we English get full independence from the so-called "united" kingdom the better.
England is the only net tax payer in the UK. We sudsidise the free education in Scotland, free prescriptions in Wales etc.

My son has just started a teaching degree and , has had to take out loans as well as myself supporting him wherever I can.
He has worked in two factories before starting uni but, they were full time hours so is looking for part-time work.
All the foreign students he knows ie, American, Chinese etc have to pay more than him for tuition.
I am angry that English students have to pay in Scotland as the only reason English students now pay in England is because Tony Blair had fifty Scottish MPs brought in from Scotland to vote for it otherwise it would have failed to pass in Parliament.
My son said that, if he had to work abroad when he has his degree he will as he has paid for it and has no feelings of loyalty towards this nation which is sad but, he isn't alone in thinking this way.

Have to admit, Rita, I am seriously thinking about going back to college and training to do something else at the moment - I'm not sure what, but it seems to me like I can't do anything practical with the qualifications I've got so I'm thinking of doing something more vocational (not that art isn't!). Maybe something in the complementary therapies area because I enjoy that.

One thing I have managed to use my art skills for - very bizarrely - is for the family history society I'm part of. I've designed an embroidered logo, made one banner for any public events and now I'm making a second one, and I'm also editing their magazine so at least I've found something to do with what I've learnt.

Her gson is doing 4 year course but I thought that was because he appears to be studying 2 subjects. gdau did 3 yrs and studied one. What is getting me jumping up and down is that students from other parts of UK pay and yet EU do not!!!! Think I feel a letter to MP coming on.
