I heard last week that GR was conducting a survey of users of GR ............... through Facebook

I emailed them to find out how non-Facebook users could also participate in the survey, and why they had not done the survey through this site.

The response from GR included the following link .....................

Please find below a link to the survey that you refer to.

http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22AXVZ2AAJ7

I filled out the survey last night, it took about 20 minutes or so, partly because the last 2 questions ask for comments and suggestions on the site and how to improve it.

Please take the time to follow the link.

I believe it is important that we the users of GR do have input into the site.

I'd best not at the moment...I can think of a few improvements, but they won't thank me for telling them LOL.

I'm sure it's useful though IF they follow suggestions. Going on past experience, I'm left in some doubt about that :-)

Oh, I have many many doubts about whether they will follow any of the suggestions they might recieve

but why not go ahead, and give them your ideas?

GR invited its members to apply to participate in market research due to take place in London; also, I believe that members were invited to contact the market research company through its given email address.

After I sent an email stating "My opinion is that it would be more useful if the questions that would be asked in the research were sent to each paid and unpaid member. Otherwise, I really do not think that there will be a balanced result. The site has members worldwide; therefore it would, I feel, be unfair to solely concentrate on members based in or near the capital of England.", I received a reply from GR, part of which stated "We are also going to be conducting an online survey though that you'll be able to take part in." I have not yet seen the online survey on GR. However, I understand that it is advertised on facebook.

In the event that GR does not advertise it through GR, I think it is important that we give constructive criticism – the site is given on GR’s page on facebook:
"For all those who could not take part in the research study sessions taking place in London, we have created an online survey. Participate in the survey here http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22AXVZ2AAJ7"

Ooooh, thank you Sylvia?

Anybody wanna know what I just said? ;)

I do not use the site for my own research (other than by searching family trees and an occasional request for specific help on the discussion boards, a half dozen times in 3 years). I use it to help others with their research, on the discussion boards, and I pay for the privilege of doing that. The discussion boards are grossly mismanaged. They are the drawing point of the site -- the expertise that paying users offer to other users -- but those "helpers" are treated with total disregard by the site management. The discussion boards are so poorly organized (categories of boards are unintelligible, "surname" subforums to which site management expressly directs new users simply cause confusion) that no new user has any idea how to use them, how they function, or what the rules of use are. The big problem is, of course, that new users, multiple times daily, post multiple threads about the same thing, on various boards or from various perspectives, e.g. separate discussion threads about children of a single couple, or a new thread monthly about something they have already received assistance with, inviting other users to waste their time doing the same rsearch again. Since there is no active moderation (and the reactive moderation that is practised is arbitrary, dishonest and offensive in the extreme), it is left to experienced users to guide new users and sort out the problems they cause for everyone else. Experienced users are then vulnerable to personal attack by individuals with axes to grind or who simply do not grasp the extent of the problems regular users are faced with and point out. This is the single most mismanaged discussion forum I have encountered in 15 years' experience with forums on the internet.

I'm not sure why there was a question mark after your name in my post! I think it was supposed to be one of them -- !

Now me, I'll settle for an inbox at all, instead of an error message, which is what I get now ...
