Sadly I don't chat on the phone these days much, I am worried that I try the patience of whoever is phoning because of my need to have things repeated because of my hearing problem. Therefore texting and sending e mails are great for me as it keeps me in contact with family and friends.
It is also cheaper.

What a great thread. I got my mobile once the children started going in different directions during school holidays. That way I could be contacted wherever I happened to be, if necessary. I text short messages to arrange a coffee or dinner date with girlfriends or send the same message to a few people, but not used to any huge extent.

We have a very old fashioned dial telephone with no mod-cons attached to it so it is in the Hall and very static. It means that if any of us are on the house phone that is where we have to be and we can't multi task at the same time. It helps to concentrate on the content of the call as well.

My 2 eldest have MSN and Facebook and drive me mad on them, so they are limited to the amount of time they spend on each. They seem to spend more time gossipping with friends they have just left at school than they do anything else. I have found that Homework occasionally has suffered as a direct result of all the other distractions available - hence the time limiting.

My OH is a self employed plumber who needs his mobile for work, however he turns it off after 5.30pm and if anyone needs him after that they have to call the house number or wait until the morning. That way, we get some peace.

I am a great letter writer and have many friends and family to whom I correspond on a regular basis. I love receiving "real" letters and just as much enjoy sending them.

As a general rule we do not answer any phones or messages after 9pm. We have an answerphone so can hear the message if someone rings.

I don't think the art of communication is dead, but the forms of communication are so varied these days, it is hard sometimes to keep up. I am out once a week with various girlfriends and, yes, we call ourselve Girls-why not. Some I was at primary school with over 40 years ago and others are people I have met more recently through my children at their various schools. So many different sets of friends, but we are all there for each other no matter what. We have all laughed, cried, celebrated and commiserated together for many years, and that is the way communication has to be at the forefront of any relationship.

Have a great day.

This is an interesting subject.

Texts and e-mails are great ways to communicate any time of the day to suit you and to not interrupt someone when you know they are working/sleeping/getting tea etc or when you don't have time for a chat yourself.

Speaking to someone on the telephone adds tone of voice, enthusiasm or lack of, hesitation.... like an extra language to the words. Meeting up will add body language and facial expressions, which can let you know how what you are saying is being received without the other person saying a word!!

Use them all I say, but with variety......a kind word is sometimes better spoken......a complicated instruction better written....

What an interesting thread.
Communication has certainly changed out of recognition in the last 100 yrs.
I was recently given my uncles collection of postcards...dated very early 1900s and was fascinated by the content.Out of about 50,only 2 were to say we are having a nice time....lots were to say that a letter was to follow, hope you are well...one even sent to person in hospital, informing him that they would visit the day after next .
Seems as the post was more reliable then.

Bob - no apologies needed, I was just explaining how my set up doesn't fit your theory :O) i seriously do have NO excuse for phoning folk and definitely not that my phone is too far away, cos that's just not possible given the size of my house LOL x

Don't apologise Bob, you make a valid point. I was just pointing out it may not apply in all cases.
