Thank you everyone, it seems I am not alone in being scared, with all the medication I have to take I have put on an awful lot of weight, last time my arms touched the sides. I have trouble lying flat as well, last time it was only twenty minutes and I couldn't move to get up. When I had the full head and spine it took an hour and a half, (I always ask) and I had to wear the face cage.
My worries won't be over when it's done, I have cancer in my hips and spine bones and they found some swelling in soft tissue near spine at last MRI, they think cancer has spread. I'm keeping everything crossed that it is not what they think.
Thank you again I will take you all with me this afternoon.

I was absoloutly terrified of them & after the last one asked if I could have a proper "look" at the scanner & there's not really a lot to it on the "scary" front!
Felt rather daft really-just close your eyes, listen to the music & I'll be with you all the way :)

Hi Caz, I had one about a year ago on my head (skin cancer on my face) but mine was only twenty minutes. I had my face in a cage and I felt like Hannibal Lector, it was horrible but it does end and I went back out and had a ciggie and a whisky. I set myself problems to think about and questions to think about to try to blot out the noise and reality. While you are laying there, think about the important things in your life, your marriage, the birth of your children or if that doesn't apply think of your career.

We will all be thinking about you and supporting you tomorrow, remember that while you are having it done.

Lots of luck Caz. will be thinking about you, in my sleep probably, but you know you can do it, try and spend a million or so on lovely things in your mind, anything to distract yourself, and no cheating and just saying I'll send so much to Liz and so much to Vicky etc etc altho I know we could help you spend it, you have to concentrate more on the detail of what you would buy.
Or promise yourself a treat afterwards and focus on that and the hour after the scan...
bigs hugs

I have had a few of these with more to come. I was teriffied, almost witless before the first one. They asked me to take in some music and I took Mozart - what a mistake, it sounded lovely until the noise started and I could hardly hear. Since then I have taken my favourite Meatloaf 'Bat out of Hell' and when they ask you about the sound before going in I now have it louder than I would normally. This way, the noise is not so horrible. Make sure you are comfortable before going in - I have a problem lying flat because base of spine hurts. They will put wedges and cushions where needed for comfort - take your time, do not feel hurried. The headphones for the music, they will also speak to you through, but I once had someone with quite a low voice and could not hear so now I ask that whoever speaks to me be clear and loud enough. When lying down, if you look back you can see the opening, which helped me first time, and it seemed as though I was in for hours and hours. Now, I shut my eyes and sing along to the tape - the times goes quicker too! One thing that kept me still and in place was the thought that I would have to do it all again if I panicked. Be prepared for the noise, I don't really know how to describe it, almost like a loud gattling gun going off. It will start and stop a few times, so don't think it is all over when it stops first time. I can do it now with no problems and maybe you will be better than I was first time. When they speak it is just reasurrance so if you don't hear, please don't worry that you have missed anything important. Good Luck xx

Thanks Dawnie, I remember how scared you were, not nice is it, I have always told them how scared I was and been on the verge of pressing the panic button a few times but never did it.
All right Keith, two men then.
I'll pm you tomorrow Claire
I'm off now to watch skating, might take my mind off it, thanks to all who replied, I feel a little better already.

Good luck Caz! I had one a few weeks ago on my knee-had to lie still for 15 minutes, they put earphones on with radio playing. Got an itch on my knee half way through-talk about chinese torture!!! You'll be fine honest.

Caz, just tell them how nervous you are and they will give something to help you relax! and ask for some earplugs, as you know how noisy they can get!!
All the best for tomorrow though!
But forget for tonight!!!

Hi Dutch , Betty, I had ear phones on last time and it seemed to help. I have always screwed my eyes tight and thought of my grandchildren, have you tried keeping your eyes shut for an hour and a half lol.
Dutch if I thought of you and your nutty ways I might laugh and move.

Good luck Caz, I agree - hate the noise of it, here they have music piped in, I've found if I keep my eyes closed and try to focus on the music, I am much better,
Thinking of you,

Caz ,
Have you tried asking them if you can go in feet first .
I know that sounds a bit daft but my hubby had one a few years ago for his hips and spine and they tried for almost an hour to get him in but no luck , in the end one of the nurses suggested going in feet first and hey presto he was fine .

Good Luck .
