This was my first real saturday job way back in the early seventies, also when we were very young my mum worked in woolies on the sweetie section. in th edgware rd,. Christmas was great and we would pop in to see her on saturdays and pick a sweetie Probaly our fault woolies went down hill. Although i did work hard in the old marylebone road store on Electricals.

that's good news Joy isn't it. I never used Wooly's that much I must confess and think it has been in serious decline long before the credit crunch. It's good tho if some of those staff get their jobs back.

Always found that the Woolies stores in different towns varied according to site availability and to whatever they stocked accordingly. When I was a kid our local W's had two floors and, as some one else said, like theirs it had everything from a food hall to toys, furnishing items and paint. Many a time I have found some item I wanted in Woolies if nowhere else. Will definitely miss it from the high street.

I BET THE JOB CENTRES BUSY THIS MORNING

Carole

Carole Report 8 Jan 2009 11:16

when I left school in 1976 I worked in Lincoln Woolies, it was a very busy shop where you could get everything from bread to paint.
The counters were the old ones where the assistant stood in the middle. There was a refit and the shops old cafe was pulled out replaced by a more modern one, and a bright paint job. All fixtures were changed to shelving, and the food department taken out. We used to get bomb scares (really) and have to get the customers out, those in the cafe were reluctant to leave their paid for meals! The staff had to search the store for a bomb, while the bomb squad were waited for. (Days of IRA). Then years later our Woolies closed down, everything went. A new Woolies opened in a new building but it was never the same, and it also closed. The nearest was Big W 16 miles away but I never found the need to go there for anything. It's sad though, all the jobs lost. And an icon of the British High St gone.

Morning All

Everything had to be sold off, lots of our local shops bought the shelves, fittings etc.
My Daughter, who'd worked at our Woolies for 8 years, thankfully found another job before redundants were started. She has told me workers who have been awarded redundancy are still waiting for their money, but in the meantime cannot seek another job or claim any benefits at all. What are they expected to live on?
Their unions are also fighting for their pension fund contributions, they will lose a % of that money too.

Look on Ebay to see Woolies' items that could become collections in years to come........workers name badges, price cards and even pic&mix adverts Col ;O)

I bought a Roxy Music LP in Woolies back in the 80's but when I got it home it was the wrong one...so I recorded it, took it back and exchanged it for the one I wanted...and recorded that too. I had a brilliant 2-album tape then hehe

I'll miss the wooden floors, the high double sided counters and......oh, they got rid of them years ago didn't they.

Ok, then I'm going to miss the Pic n Mix.

Good ol' Woolies, the High streets won't be the same without them.
