Mick from the Bush Report 30 Nov 2008 03:33

Wait until you get possums in the roof Deb!
They're 4 times the size of squirrels.
You really know you are alive when they
start tap-dancing on a tin roof at 3AM>.!

Seriously though, I have a light on a timer
in the roof cavity. Keeps the little vermin much quieter!

Yea! We are now one squirrel down!

We were having a family dinner and discussing our "guest". I mentioned that if the squirrel was in the trap, that he should be given some water.

Hubby went up into the attic (as you do during dinner) and came back with "Nutty". He is my buddy from the summer, a beautiful black squirrel.

Anyway he went for a nice little car ride and was set free about two miles upriver from us.

I would have waited until it was daylight so that he could get his bearings.
I just hope that he didn't end up a cayote snack.

I feel guilty, but then again he could have eaten through the wiring and caused a fire. Not good when your house is made from wood.

So all is good.

We get 1 or two mice a year.We had a mouse that returned to us from the local churchyard. He must've liked our house as he crossed a main road to return. When we caught him the second time he went a on a car trip to the local reclaimed gravel pit.

I've now found that if I take them to the local common, they don't return. I do get funny looks as I walk there talking soothingly to a carrier bag with a trap in it.

I'm sure the lure of lots of old takeaways is much nicer than raw potatoes!

Deb - I hate to rain on your parade love but they will roam upwards of 6 miles a night!

Nutty will be back, after all he likes you, and has safe secure accommodation (in his cage) and gets taken on trips! Why would he want to leave you? )))))

Best try to find out how he gets in, and then get a bouncer on the door!

poor little Nutty - how you can sleep at night I don't know!!! I had no idea there were black squirrels - when I was a child there were only red ones and then the greys killed them all off. Apparently they are now making a comeback so I look forward to seeing some red ones again.

I understand it's illegal here in the UK to release any squirrels you might catch in a trap.
Probably why Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has a recipe for squirrel ragout... can't say I fancy it much though (I was once a junior member of the Tufty club - LOL!)

Deb Vancouver (18665) Report 2 Dec 2008 00:24

I feel quite sad that Nutty has gone. I know that's crazy, but we got to know each other during the summer :)
He is more than welcome to hang out in the back yard, I just don't need him as a lodger.

I've been peering out in the yard all day expecting to see him. Maybe the couple of miles was far enough and he is happy at the other end of the river.

Now the little tiny one "Peanut" I wonder where he is??

And so you should Deb! Poor little thing is probably crying his little eyes out wondering how to get home to Deb's nice warm house. Nothing to eat and no-where to go. Alone, without friends and soon it will be Christmas. What will poor Nutty do? How will he survive?....and all because he chewed a few wires trying to make a comfortable home for himself.......Yer heartless woman!

But then....maybe he will meet another and they will have children. He will sit them on his knee and tell them the story of where he used to live, how he loved it there and meant no harm. His offspring, of which there will be many, will tell the story to their children.....Then one day, when poor Nutty has passed away they will all decide to visit the ancestral home of their beloved Father who died of a broken heart over the cruel way he was taken from all that was dear to him......They decide to make a pilgrimage and maybe set up home there ....all 90 of them lol

Susan who has nothing better to do at this time in the morning :-)))))

Omg, Susan, you are worse than Esther Rantzen telling fairy tales to the bugs in the bushtucker trial lol

You want to mind Nutty doesn't find his way to your garden, if he is that clever he might hitch a ride and drop in.

How's the bathroom coming along? We might be able to use the shower by Christmas altho bath still won't have panel, room will have no heating, and walls are still sort of yukky chocolate brown which was under the old tile effect wall paper he took off last November! His ex had rubbish taste in home decor, still living with it in here, but if the bathroom has taken a year and not finished, will never encourage him to start on kitchen/diner while I stay here, would be the worse nightmare ever!

Tsk! Liz

I have no time to worry about bathrooms when poor little nutty is homeless and wandering goodness knows where.....Poor little thing......I bet he is a clever little fellah though and finds his way home :-)).

Deb Vancouver (18665)

Deb Vancouver (18665) Report 2 Dec 2008 03:17

Like heck they will be visiting their ancestral home!

Seeing as Nutty is such a smart squirrel (having young ones sit on his knee telling them stories) I'll put an ad in the local rag for him.

I'll explaine that he is more than welcome to visit, but seeing as he doesn't have a job there is no way he can afford the rent I'm going to be charging in future for the attic.
If and when he does get a job good enough to afford the outrageous rent, I will need him to sign a lease agreement.
Some of the conditions are:
1) No running
2) If running is required (in the case of emergency) it will be done in such a manner that it doesn't disturb the downstairs tennants.
3) No chewing wires
4) No hoarding food stuffs over winter as this may attract rats.
5) No overnight guests or loud parties.

Nutty doesn't know how good he had it. How many other squirrels do you know who got to attend a 21st birthday dinner?

Susan9363343 Report 2 Dec 2008 03:32

But it is nearly Christmas Deb....where is your heart?.....poor little Nutty...he is homeless! and where could he find a job at this time of year as a professional wire cutter to pay rent to a landlady who he thought was his friend and loved him so much she invited him to a party?.

I bet you are wiping tears from your eyes for being so harsh to the poor fluffy little fellah.... and feeling guilty...... and feeling like scrooge.....Did you even pack him a lunch box before he was cast into the unknown?...How could you? Tut!

Rasberries back lol.....

Susan who is waiting for the men in the white coats :-)))

Edit to add.....He is soooo sweeet! You wicked woman!
