I think the problem is the shop assistant gets the fine for selling alcohol to minors , so they are being over zealous

There was a similar incident reported on our local tv and in the paper, the chap had his small child with him so they refused him.

It sounds as if it has been drummed into the shop workers at Tesco's about selling alcahol to people who are buying for minors. Seems they are a bit over the top. I work in retail & if I sell to someone under age or knowingly to someone who is buying for underage it is me & not the store who gets fined. It is very difficult sometimes & we get customers who have no I.D. & get stroppy.Last year I had a little lad who wanted to buy some party poppers, on tills these days it comes up as age restricted so I could'nt sell them to him, I know it sounds stupid but the customer behind him said, go on sell them to him. My reply was I was'nt allowed, he then replied that he would buy them for him. I still had to refuse & he got quite stroppy with me. All kinds of things are age restricted now. We all want to keep our jobs and don't want to be landed with a hefty fine. We also have to fill in a book every time we refuse a customer. If you are lucky enough to be of age & not look it then please carry I.D. It makes life alot easier for us in the shops & you.
Hilary.

My Mum was in the same supermarket with my son who looks under 16. She asked him to get a lottery ticket and the assistant wouldn't sell it, which was right. However when my Mum went to buy it herself the assistant wouldn't sell to her, in case she was buying for him! This is a bit too silly. Obviously she had to go elsewhere for it.

As regards showing a warrant card. Before chip and pin I served someone whose signature was different on the card to the receipt I refused the card he flashed a warrant card at me and said 'i'm a policeman' so what the signature was still different.

The policy sounds a bit over the top, but it is all part of the governments crackdown on the sale of alcohol to minors, of by adults for the consumption by minors.

One of my friends went into said supermarket a few weeks ago, bought herself some sanitary towells, and was served by a young man.

"Time of the month is it?"

Well, I won't say what she said back to him!! She put in a formal complaint, and he got a written warning for it!

Hi all,

They havent brought this in over here.......yet!!

They will lose a mint over Chrsitmas if they continue with this crazy interpretation of the law. The law only requires due diligence. I am not sure of the exact circumstances but can you not drink wine with a meal whilst out in restaurants once you are 16??

Anyway, off to Te*co now for a few bottles of wine and a Bob the Builder toy, the wine for the 3yo cos I love Bob!!!

love Theresa

My daughter and her friends were asked for ID to buy a marker pen needed for college. I assume it was in case they wanted to sniff it! ?
She was also unable to buy a lottery ticket ( she`s 18) because she didn`t look over 25 and had no ID with her. The assistant did let me buy one.... and then hand it over !

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 21 Oct 2008 12:46

I think there is a simple answer to all of this.

If we all had our own "Big Brother Personal Number" tattooed onto our foreheads (they would look like barcodes maybe). Then any supermarket, off licence etc could just scan us and they would know our age etc.

Could also be used to top up things like train fares, bus fares etc so no fumbling around with things like ticket machines - save a lot of time as well!

Whaddya reckon?

Would you mind if your local supermarket closed down?

 Lindsey*

Lindsey* Report 21 Oct 2008 12:58

I wouldn't be too sorry if the local supermarket closed earlier, every evening there is a little gang of underage hoodies trying to coerse adults into buying their booze and fags. Generally they succeed.
Where, since they have no jobs do these kids get the money from?

Sue

Sue Report 21 Oct 2008 13:12

Dermot,

In all honestly no! They take advantage of us locals during the summer when they hike up all the prices when the tourists are here. In the winter they understock on fresh fruit and vegetables so they can manipulate prices.

I'd rather they shut and lots of our smaller shops reappeared in the now 'dead' high street.

UPDATE...
my daughter and s-i-l contacted Te*co today....and spoke to the manager.....who admitted that the cashier HAD acted a bit over the top.....he apologized and is getting a written apology to them...
As it was my son-i-l who was asked for ID which he gave...then that... should have been that......

Dermot......
Yes I still think its a good idea to ask for ID.....but when it is produced from such a good source....then it should have been believed...
also they gave their te*co loyalty card to the cashier, which has their address's and names on!!!
also....there is NO WAY my daughter could be mistaken for underage......

I have worked in retail long enough to know when someones doing a 'jobsworth'...
Thank you everyone....I will wipe this off tommorrow

Grabagran Report 22 Oct 2008 02:37

Don't wipe it CMD

It is a reminder that laws are put in place to safeguard the supermarket, and the shopper, but proves they don't work.

Hope daughter & S.I.L. get more than a written apology. More like a few quids worth of vouchers.

Little Lost

Little Lost Report 22 Oct 2008 06:02

my daughter aged 23 was refused to be served with a lottery ticket. But as I have also worked as a cashier it is up to the cashier to interpret the rules to safeguard her/him self. And the use of the refusal book is well advised as it shows that you dont just sell to anybody.
They are not allowed to drink the stuff on the premises as it is an off-licence and evenin the car park it is still considered on site.
How can you stop anybody from opening a can once they have stepped outside the door but not left the car park?

the cashier is often told that the shop would rather lose a sale than lose the licence
