Blue Moon Report 9 Oct 2008 20:21

Any sufferers ? .

Do you know of anything that might help, its on the verge of becoming unbearable,
this last few weeks its got louder and its making me so miserable,
sometimes I feel like I WILL go mad.

I went to see a specialist about 3 years ago,he was very helpful (not) and told me that my brain would get used to it !
My GP handed me the address for the Tinnitus web site, but no piratical help.

Has anybody tried the low level sound generators,if so did it work ?
getting rather desperate now.

Oh yes I know whats that like believe me and yes you could pull your hair out - no such thing as telly off and sit and read a book in peace and quiet when its happening.

I get it now and again (thankfully not all the time). More so when I am very tired actually.

But the only way I deal with it is always having the TV on (or radio if you prefer) so that you have another background noise to counter-act the tinnitis.

Very best of luck

Yes I do its damn annoying. My GP did said that some people in desperation have done drastic things because of the torment of it.

I think you will have to learn to live with it and try and block it mentally a mind over matter type of thing. Sorry thats not much help I know, I have had bouts of it I think 6 months was the longest and then one day I woke up and suddenly realised there was no "noise". Its like any other annoying noise the more you think about it the worse it gets. I am not sure what causes it to be honest, I have never googled that one (amongst my many ailments) lol.

You have my sympathies, I've suffered for quite a few years now, I'm lucky in that although it's always present it doesn't bother me most of the time.
It is definately more noticable in quiet situations, when I'm tired or unwell it's much louder.
I have low blood pressure and that can be one of the causes.
Have you been given a cause for yours ??

AnninGlos Report 9 Oct 2008 20:40

I have had it for about 15 years. Fortunately most of the time I can manage to block it. And, again fortunately, mine is not high pitched but a rushing sort of engine noise. talking about it now I can 'hear' it again. sometimes it bothers me when i am in bed and it does annoy me that there is no such thing as 'quiet', i can always hear it in my head. i am also hard of hearing and the tinitus doesn't help. I think drowning it out is about all you can do, and try not to concentrate on it. I take medication which controls high blood pressure!

Editing to say i think I may have had it for more like 20 years, time goes so fast but looking back it must be that.

Tina,
I do understand what your GP was saying.

Mrs Blue Eyes,
Not been give any reason for it but about 3 1/2 years ago I had a really bad head cold, and we used to go to the local rock club, ether of these could be the culprit

Edit, I also had a Heart attack at the end of April so lots of different medication which could be making it worse.

Heather Report 9 Oct 2008 20:45

I have had tinnitus for several years. It used to be occasionally but about 10 years ago, after surgery, it remained continuous. Like Tina says TV and radio distract from it. I go to sleep with the TV on and time it to go off. I have found that I have got used to it.
Some cases can be helped with surgery but not mine as it is connected to loss of hearing.
I would suggest that you see another specialist for a second opinion

Hi Ann,
Mine is in both ears,it sounds like a fizzing noise with a very high whistle in one ear.
I thing Ive got myself into a vicious circle unable to block it out.

Heather,
I have had the TV on every night for about 3 years much to the annoyance of my hubby,
if i wake in the night i usually end up getting up,cant stand the silence.

I had forgotten how annoying it is when trying to get to sleep, luckily I have not had an attack for a while, but reading Ann's response reminded me that it can start up again when I have had a nasty cold too.

Betty,I really do sympathise.

At the moment I can't concentrate on anything, making stupid mistakes at work all the time,

Well had a quick read and found it interesting.

I have in the past 4 years cut out salt in my cooking and on my food (this was mentioned). I also do not drink cola - as they changed the recipe and hate the taste. I also no longer have to use my inhalers for asthma since my cat died. May be pure coincidence but interesting.

Do any of you use salt?

I don't add salt to anything,I drink Cola and I take a low dose asprin daily which ive read might not help.

Blue moon I've been thinking about your going to bed with the tv on, I'm not sure that is a good idea.
Tv screens flicker and the noise levels rise and fall, what is needed to help block the noise of tinitus is constant noise of a certain pitch, unfortuately tinitus is different from person to person, so for some a simple fan in the corner of the room is enough, for some bird sounds, wind noises, rivers flowing, waves crashing I think it's trial and error..

Good luck

I have had it for years. Thankfully it is a low hum that is rather reminiscent to hearing Hackney speedway from three miles away. (Something I used to hear as a child) Until I read this thread I thought I could only hear it when lying in bed or when its very quiet. However I've got the radio on and traffic outside and I can hear it now. Thanks!
I can obviously block it quite well normally.
I don't eat much salt and I do drink coke.
