I quite agree cmd

Debating is usually interesting and discussing a topic often makes people realise what their own beliefs are.

It isn't often possible to change anyone's mind in a debate if they are already convinced of their own opinion though. That can then lead to unpleasantness if their entire life is based on that belief.

I've always enjoyed debating but the polarised opinions make it difficult at times.

It is impossible when the debate is turned into name calling and mud slinging towards people instead of addressing the topic. Sadly, that is the norm here, it has to be said. It's refreshing when it doesn't happen though.

Apes have learnt to communicate using language. Maybe not speech as we know it - but there are humans who can't communicate using words - the deaf, those with learning difficulties who communicate using Makaton ( a simplified form of sign language) etc.
Here's just one example of an ape communicating:

Evolution takes thousands of years - give apes a chance!!!

Dear Sue....
I know from your postings that you are very well informed, and knowledgable....as I know some others too are.......who are regular posters....
I look forward to people like you sharing your knowledge....and yes there have been times when I have looked at things from a different angle, or perspective....
It can be science...religion..Health, day to day things...
I have seen sorrow...tears ...compassion... prayers...encouragement...laughter.. all sorts on theses boards... a little bit of true life...a little bit of 'fairy tales'...

We are all each others Teacher....and each others Student....
It would be good to visit and leave a thread having learned something...having given something.....
our world would be a better place....If we treated everyone as we would like to be treated......
regards cmd xxxxxxxx
dont mean for this to sound mushy...but cannot spell half the words I would like to have used.....lol

Thank you cmd :)

I suppose it is so difficult on the Internet to discuss as we would face to face.
We can't see the expressions on people's faces nor hear the inflections in their voices.

We don't really know most of the people we "meet" online (though I have made some very close friends on the Internet).

I try very hard to read everything I post several times before sending it to try to be fair and clear but from time to time we all fall out with others if we are regular posters.

Each of us has a right to an opinion and our own beliefs but adding to an open forum we mustn't be surprised if others have alternative ideas.

Toleration is the important thing BUT if a poster puts forward a view that seems incredible or ridiculous to others (such as the David Icke view that the Queen is an alien lizard!) then no-one should be surprised if anyone puts their own view over forcefully.
It then becomes a heated debate and it is down to who can make the most convincing argument.

Has everyone left the building then?
thats another thread I've killed......
I'll turn the lights out then shall I?
goodnight everyone.

and remember what peace there is in silence..
we are all a child of the Universe..
xxxxxx
EDIT
Whoops sorry thought you had all gone......
I agree..... I have seen some terrible misunderstandings...
That why sometimes i give the boards a miss....If i am not in the right frame of mind....and may come across as weird or whatever.... My life is very stressful at the moment... so just come and go for awhile...I must be honest...I just catch the 'tail' end of a lot of arguements...so cannot judge who or what was right...or wrong.
I'm off to bed now...
take care...

Have Monkies learnt to talk? is this a reference to the current round of political part conferences?

Mmmmm...have read most of this thread..interesting..I like what you said..C.M.D..about we are all eathers others teacher, & vice versa..I have learned so much on here about peoples point of views, and made me look at things differently..so a very valid point. As for Sue..you are obviously well read, to put intelligent ideas you have described. For example, if such a thread was not started..I would never of known about that book you recommended..(which I wouldn`t mind reading)..
I am of the thinking that knowedge is power..and with this one can `argue` the cause with topics such as..`Have monkies learnt to talk`...My theories on evolution are basic..but I do agree with a lot of what Sue has said.

Good morning Ophelia

Ah you noticed I like reading then?!

I don't so much read books as devour them and on as wide a range of interesting subject matter as possible. I also subscribe to Focus magazine which is a great monthly publication on science and technology. It explains things so that artists like me can understand!

Can I please suggest that before any more similar threads to this are started that those who think evolution is nonsense read the following website thoroughly? I have read every bit of that and all the links so I'm happy to argue any bit of it but we do need to start on a level playing field!
http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/2437/

Creationism is not a valid scientific alternative to mainstream science. It worries me that a huge proportion of the population of the most powerful nation in the world are living in a fog of dogma.

I don't like upsetting people but if there are going to be threads based on statements which are claimed as factual but are in reality twaddle, then anyone posting them onto an open forum like this cannot then complain bitterly if others shoot down their ideas in flames.

This isn't a personal attack on any particular individual but on the opinions they hold.

In a democracy that is how it works.

Sue
