So we have a Recession in a couple of months. I'd imagine we are all going to have to 'tighten our belts'

Lets all get together and share our tips for managing our food and household bills.

I normally do most of my shopping at Morrisons 5 minutes drive away. But lately I have been 'shopping around' as I dont like Morrisons fruit and veg. I have been surprised at the difference in prices in the cheaper shops, Aldi and Netto. We also have new shop to our area called Home Bargins. (But always check the use by dates)
I am getting quite good at this 'shopping around' lark over the last couple of months, and now ready to beat this recession.

So lets help each other and start saving our pennies.

I am off to Netto in a while.
Sugar is on offer at 64p, limited to 6 per customer.
8 Golden Delicious, 49p.
2Ltr Robinsons Orange or Blackcurrant & Apple, 99p.

It would be best to start another thread Claire, it would be nice if we could keep this one just for money saving ideas.

See you soon.
Jenny.

Good Morning all. No I find it easier to iron it's not so dry, it is a bit of a pain charging in and out of the garden every time it rains, but I must say I do feel pleased with myself. Also I buy more potatoes than I used to, very versatile, mash, roasties, jackets etc.

Also when my little one starts full time school in Sept, I am planning to dig all the shrubs and bushes out of one of the garden borders and grow my own veg. Have my name on an alottment waiting list but could be waiting years.

Veggie soup, yum, make loads, what's left over add cream, blend, freeze for a pasta sauce. Add a bit of nutmeg really brings the flavour out. x

I have started to grow all my own herbs as I use such a lot in my cooking. Got so fed up of having to pay 60p-80p for Coriander, Parsley basil etc.
I now just pop outside and cut just what I need.

I am about to try Chilli Peppers soon.

This time of year there is a glut of tomatoes around neighbours with greenhouses etc., blend with a little bit of water, cream (can you tell i'm overweight), and some of your lovely fresh basil.

I plan my weeks meals with the family and decide what and when we are having. I write it in the work-top diary.
If there is too much I label and freeze it and son takes it to work when on nights.
Mum always goes for the BOGOF's and sends the other to me. Why she can't keep it for herself I can't understand.

Looks like the Country will be Digging for Victory again soon. Not a bad thing.

I have always loved cooking, my pasta sauce is 'out of this world'

I have to admit I have a little problem with food, I hoard it. As some members know, I have 4 fridges and 2 large freezers. Ok yes, I have an obsession. Lol.

I would love to grow my own herbs and things, and don't think I haven't tried, but I seem to be Doctor Death! I have killed ivy in the past, green things hate me!

Having said that,we didn't have time to go shopping last week and have had to make one week's shopping last for two.Apart from running out of spuds and sending the old man down to the veg stall we have eked pretty well.Might be doing that more often.

Hi Joan, this is where I go wrong. I really should start planning my meals. I alway used to when money was a little tight when the 4 children were little.
Now only one 19yr old at home now. Trouble is we all like different foods. I dont eat a great deal, tend to eat when hungry. Hubby is a ganet and eats like a horse. Daughter is quite finicky.

Bet we could all save money if we rotated our freezers and used the stuff at the bottom instead of leaving it till it goes white and dehydrated, got stuff lurking at the bottom of mine older than my son!

Ok, who wants two aunt Bessies yorkshire puds, a magnum and a wheat free pitta bread ?

Any takers ? I want room for a chili.

Mommylonglegs

Mommylonglegs Report 18 Aug 2008 11:48

Tell you what, i'll have the Magnum but will eat it straight away as there's no room in the freezers.
I would hate to think what is lurking in the bottom of one of mine. I do know that a bag of broad beans spilt in there and of course there will be the odd pea.

Going to get ready to go to Netto for 6 bags of sugar, Wilkinson for Nescafe coffee only 99p and then Home Bargains for Primula Cheese with Chives only 69p. Yum yum.

An old boyfriend of mine, way back, used to aim for pheasants in the road, stop, get out, chuck it in the boot, and state that was his Sunday roast and a fiver saved on a joint of meat!
