Dear Eldrick,
I do get your point.....and respect your stance on whatever you choose...you are a free man....to do whatever you choose....
but how can it be made equal?...people of no faith should have no preference either....... to say whether people with faith..should be made to partake in anything that they believe conflicts with their belief...
It is just my opinion and my knowledge that, some of the beliefs, that get called 'cults.'...are in fact more peaceable, and lawabiding, than the major world religions...and would not dream of going to war, to kill at all, let alone their fellow believer in another country...

''It swings and roundabouts'' me dear.....

Hi CMD

I am pretty indifferent, to be honest, to any of them, as I have no personal belief at all, as you rightly point out.

I do, however, question why some should be more 'privileged' than others, if you will allow me to put it that way, which is, I suppose, my point.. The fact that they exist is meaningless....if someone wants to believe that magic underpants somehow makes them a better person, so be it. I prefer more rational ways :-)

But let me put it this way - do you think it it OK, for some faiths to be exempt from certain things? I personally don't - that has nothing to do with anyones beliefs or faith - its simply a matter of fairness and equitable treatment.

Dear Eldrick,
I have just got in from work....or I would have answered this before...

You asked the question, how many of these Cults, should we tolerate?
If you do not believe that God exists, which you have stressed on several occasions.......How can you go along with there being any religious cults...in so much, that there is a difference between the organised state/world .religions and minority beliefs..
surely to a man with your opinion of God, all belief, and all religion....all have the same value....
or am I mistaken?....and, you do show a preference to some beliefs/religions.
.
If that person is law abiding and a tax paying member of this country's society, should'nt that person have the right to worship whatever God they choose....or no God at all....
I do agree with you that, quote ''no Religion/belief should cause physical or mental harm'' to any other person....

just a small point....
Is it so bad that a persons deep religous belief, forbids them to take up arms against their fellow man?? after all I have read many a thread and post on here saying....religion causes war......and yet when one hears of a people who will not kill.or join military forces.......they are vilified.for it......
How refreshing that there should be a religion that stands by their commitment to their belief...to love their fellow man......I would certainly feel safe in their company.....

At one point I was disturbed from cooking tea by a JH doorstepping. I am always polite but will never take their profferred literature. Anyway, this particular night they were trying to get me to take a leaflet about the evils of the arms trade. I let them go all through their spiel and then when they said 'would you like to have our leaflet to read more?' I just told them that as I actually worked in the arms trade at a manufacturer of very large naval hardware it would be hypocritical of me to do so. they've never called again. Not sure if it's a coincidence, but their church is only a few hundred yards from where I live. ;)

Whew!

CMD - I dont believe I am displaying any prejuduces? Why on earth should cults, religions, minority beliefs, whatever you want to call them, enjoy a special status that affords them immunity from discussion, criticism or pointing out of inconsistencies...?

Is it not a valid point to say that whilst the govt. is introducing citizenship tests, a religion can sidestep this by saying we dont believe in loyalty to the state? Why is it not open to ask that question?

There seems to be a presumption that if someone says they are following a belief, then any criticism becomes taboo!

I dont believe I am judging anyone, not am I criticising anyone.

By all means, follow whatever cult turns you on, provided it is not illegal or immoral.

However, don't try to push it onto others or expect them to agree with your ideas.

CMD

CMD Report 22 Jul 2008 21:31

Dear Eldrick,
I have studied many religions and cults, and all of them have traditions, beliefs, symbols, customs, that people would find offensive...or unsuitable to themselves as individuals....
It is up to the individual to seek out what they find acceptable, or the truth to what they want to practice,
I think that people who have no spritual belief at all, should not judge those who do, and visa versa.
However what amuses me (and annoys me) are people who like to stir contention about certain religions, by calling them Cults...
As I have seen you defend the rights of minorty groups on this board, I am amazed that you are showing such predijuce against what you deem to be cults.....by asking how much they should be tolerated..

How, and why does, not voting, or not joining the army, effect you.......
I would much rather live next door to a peacable religious fanatic......
.than the twisted, lieing bigot of a political councillor that I have for a neighbour!!!!
