jax, have to agree with everything said here, especially with what daff says. I am sure this is discriminatory and if the school governors are agreeing with the ehad I would go to the education authority, the Welsh Assembly and the newspapers and even the local TV. but I would also let them do the sponsored walk because to not allow them to do so will make them feel even more excluded. Children enjoy things like that. and Daffs banner is a good idea, but held by a parent not a child. assuming parents will be there. Something like "Our children, raising money to send oter children on day trips"
How dare they exclude them, how disgusting.

Sorry everyone I am reading your replies but cant keep up with you all lol

Yes the sponsored walk is to be held during school time and will be taking them away from lessons.

We are very angry about all this and the effect its having on the children and yes we are also contacting the local town councellor and mp about this.

There are also many other concerns as to why there are 14 children in one year with special needs in such a small area, in which the first 2 proper years of those childrens learning there were many changes in the school (new head, amalgamation) and it seems that children who were doing well in year 1 now have learning problems. But that is a long story.

Boo is nagging me to make flap jacks so will have to shoot for a while.

Thankyou all so much your opinions have given me some very valid point to make to the school and at the meeting.

Lol Jax... you're excused class to make flapjacks, Boo will love it.

Now I am a bit of a cynic in some areas... I would want to be asking the head...
Are any of the teaching staff/support workers etc removed from Boo's class on school trip days to provide support for those going on the trip?

This was a regular cop out for Heads so that they could maintain adult:child ratios on outside field trips for the mainstream youngsters. This would of course mean that Boo's class was staffed at minimum levels on those trip days.
I have seen that happen so many times... and have even been personally withdrawn from my named child to provide general support on an outing, before it clicked what was happening.

That's for starters.. I am off for some brain food!!

Oh... and just a note about funding..... the school will have massive cash bonuses and extra funding for each special needs child, and some of that funding is allowed to be diverted to the rest of the school.... cynic that I am, I wonder whether some of the children who were once doing well, but fell behind due to the changes.... well, maybe the massive cash injection was more of a carrot for the powers-that-be than the welfare and education of the children who were most affected by the disruption.

I have to say, that I smell a rat in this......

Love

Daff.... and Boo... bring me a flap jack when you come to the Fair, please, would you???? xxxxxxx

Thanks Everyone

The learning difficulties in this class range from children who have problems from birth due to being very premature, to behavioural problems (ADHD) and in minor cases like Boo's concentration problems.

They are all lovely kids who just need a bit more patience and encouragement and I feel leaving them out of activities such as the school trips is not the way to go abuot encouraging them and helping them gain their confidence in learning.

Thanks all again so much, I will keep you all updated.

Jax/Stacey

that is so not far discrimination is what it is.
Children learn more when they are doing fun things like trips and dont even realise they are learning so why do they exclude the ones that would benefit most.

Go right to the top take no prisoners Boo and her friends are worth it.

I can't believe this..............how dare they discriminate!!!!

What really made me spit pips was when I read they were insisting that all the sn children took part in a fundraiser so others could go off on trips. It's bad enough them being discriminated against but then to be expected to raise money as well........grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Sorry can't say any more.....if I did it may get this thread removed and that isn't fair.

Debbie

Debbie Report 18 May 2008 14:08

Joan
The school can not make you pay for any trip, it must be made clear that they are asking for a donation towards the trip, but the trip may not go ahead if enough children do not pay.

I would obtain the special needs policy from your school, you are intitled to see it. Phone the local education authority first thein monday morning then take it from there.

Good luck

lol Gossip Girl..... you (the universal you here, lol) generally do a wonderful and often thankless job... I was once the fundraiser on the schoolboard, as the schools token rep, lol.... I worked with special needs youngsters. Our poor Governer went through the mill many a time..... think back to The Children Act and the early days, a residential MLD school where staff had been allowed to hit youngsters, just for starters.... they gave the poor man hell before they accepted the changes... or moved on!

TessAkaBridgetTheFidget

TessAkaBridgetTheFidget Report 18 May 2008 14:39

This discrimination just shouldn't be allowed to happen.

How dare the Head exclude some children from the school trip. Shouldn't be called a School trip if not all the children are allowed to join in.

All children should be able to learn a lot from these trips if properly organised. Especially in Social and Emotional parts of development.

What sort of message is the Head sending to the rest of the School.
i.e. "Let's not mix with the Special Needs children if we can help it"

Disgusting! is the mildest thought that comes to mind.

Seperating children from their friends is so wrong. Also a missed educational opportunity for all of the children in the school.

I was under the impression that the idea of having children with special needs children in a main stream school was INCLUSION. After all that is the way things should be in the outside world.

This head seems to have other ideas, and if so is he/she the right person to have as a headteacher.

Please do protest about this to MP, Education Board etc.
This is unacceptable behaviour.
by the "powers that be" inside the school.
Things like this should be included in the OFSTED report.

I agree with everyone who said that School Day trips are (or certainly should be) educational opportunities.
Things that are observed on the trip can be carried back to the class room for further learning.

I hope that you get this sorted out to your own satisfaction.
And that this head learns something from this experience.

Tess
