Jean, you haven't got one of your Platts married to an unknown Fanny have you:)

Just looked on Freebmd but no Fanny Sullivan
marrying in the area from 1892 to 1901.

Do you think she shacked up with one of my Platts. If she did you've got no chance cos my Platts are the original secret squirrels:)

Uggers my grandpa's age on his Army Pension in 1914 doesnt match up with his birth cert - I reckon he lied about his age to join up.

He also lied about his age on his marriage cert. in 1915 a year after receiving his pension (this time downwards to appeal to his young bride, no doubt!)

In fact he was a lying toad right through his life, by all accounts )))))

BTW I've just been on that site, no problem - and it didnt cost me a bean either.

Jac ))))

Hello Mrs E:)) Was his age years out? This just seems a bit much. Although, looking at his record he didn't last very long cos he was reported for drunkeness once a week:)

One of mine joined up at 15 and was discharged not long after going abroad - don't know if they found out or whether he realised it wasn't all glory and fessed up.

I think we were typing at the same time, Jean. I think I have as many missing from the 1901 as from the 1861:) Roll on the 1911 eh

Yes it was Uggers - I think he enlisted well before the lower age limit and went through the Boar War (II I think) - discharged after maximum length of service, then re-enlisted at the start of WWI (but was on a reserve I believe).

He was then in fact illegally receiving the Queens shilling throughout part of his service, and during his pension years which lasted up until 1949!!

There was such an age gap between him and my grandmother at the time of their marriage that I found it difficult to understand at first, but since finding out details about him I have sussed him out. In particular telling the Registrar that he was the recipient of the DCM - Distinguished Conduct Medal (it's on his wedding cert.) - pmsl - District Court Marshall more like!

I dont suppose he was the only lying toe-rag in the Army at that time - pmsl

Thanks Gwen but I don't normally have any problems.

You'll have to hang on a bit longer yet Jean cos us three still haven't got together to decide what we're having for you;)

Uggers

Uggers Report 4 May 2008 18:15

I'm feeling more tempted to accept them now Jac thank you:))

Hi Kay, she wasn't married by 1891 and was only 18 then but I have done a search for a Platt marrying a Frances or Fanny, no surname and nothing comes up. But then, in John's records (and this is 1914), he doesn't know where she's living so she could be anywhere...

Hi Jean - doesn't give a discharge address but his mother and brother James are in Pickering Street and his brother Maurice is on the Pentonville Road.

No, I need to try soundex when it's working a bit better, Kay - thank you.

Claire, I'm not sure if that's him or if he's the one in Hoxton. Could be neither of course:) But people born in Clerkenwell don't usually give their place of birth as City of London, although he was born around St Sepulchre so it's possible.
