On a quick trip down to the village for some chainsaw oil, it dawned on me that it was a bank holiday weekend. How did I know? Easy. Every rambler and pedal cyclist north of Watford Gap is out.

What is it with bank holiday ramblers? Why do they never travel in groups of less than 6 and all wear red berghaus jackets, yellow bobble hats and green gaiters? And those damned telescopic ski sticks? Whats that all about? Why do they have 90 litre rucksacks with enough survival gear to last 3 months in the Arctic circle, when all they are doing is walking a straight road between two pubs, a maximum of 3 miles (depending if you’re coming or going). The leader always has a waterproof map case round his neck, a GPS and a silva compass (with spares in the outside left upper pocket of the rucksack). Even though there isn’t a bend in the road and there’s a signpost every hundred yards.

And these pedal cyclists. I mean to say…come on. I pay tax for my car (cough). Why do you have to ride 3 abreast all the time? And, worst of all, why do you have to wear those tight lycra spandex type all in one suits that show every little detail….? It is highly dangerous when motorists try to get up close to get a better view then realize that, in actual fact, it is a male cyclist. I have seen loads of motorists do that. Not that I would, of course.

at least they're enjoying the fresh air :-)

We used to get them coming up our private farm road, despite the PRIVATE, BULL IN FIELD, BEWARE OF THE DOG and DANGER - LIVE LANDMINES signs.

Until the rambler grapevine got to work and the word was passed around about the madman who sunbathed in all weathers in just a moleskin posing pouch (lots of moles perished in the name of fashion to make that) and a baseball cap with a little windmill on the top. Who often cleaned his chainsaws in the garden.
