No probs with your comments Ann, Everyone has their own feelings about the race. If we all liked the same thing the world would be a boring place.

You get your stake back plus whatever the odds are at the time of betting.

Can't always work it out myself, but a £1 EW bet on a favourite and £1 EW bet on an outsider adds to the fun!!

Sorry Anne didn't mean to be insensitive. The funs is the betting and yes I always hope every year they make it without any injuries or deaths

It depends on the odds that you have when you place the bet. I've placed a £2 bet on Simon at odds of 12/1 If it wins I'll get £34. if it comes 2nd,3rd,or 4th I'll get £8.

go for it if you want to I say, I'm certainly not having a go at anyone for doing so, just pointing out that the best bet is a dead horse or two!!!!!

Don't want to spoil anyone's fun, really I don't, even if it doesn't sound like it!!!!

Ann, I know you don't like it but if you can just watch for 3 or 4 minutes you will see horses fall, jockeys being thrown off, as happens in steeplechasing. Then a curious thing happens, the riderless horses continue to run and jump the fences, they absolutely love it ! They are certainly not forced to continue, they enjoy this chance to gallop and jump, it is what thoroughbred horses do.

It is in no way comparable to cock fighting, badger baiting, (dare I say it?) fox hunting, etc....

But I respect your opinion Ann.

ps. Have a bob or two on McKelvey, (each way).

I love the Grand National- it takes me back to my younger days with my family- newspapar open and a pin to pick the horse.

Dad went off to bookies with my 20p- I won one year with Red Rum and was thrilled to bits to get money back from my bet.

The horses are well cared for and are bred purely for racing- they love it. Think about Red Rum when he used to visit in his older days- his ears were alert and he was raring to go.

Feels like a national tradition not to be lost.

Best of Luck to all

We've just come out of William Hill's in Flixton, we had no idea how to put a bet on, but neither did half the other people in the queue, the staff were great walking up and down helping people and checking their betting slips before you got to the counter. Top Marks to them.
