In view of the histrionics recently, I think it is inevitable that there will be changes.

I personally think it would be a good idea to have the boards in a forum system, like many other sites. Each board could be moderated, possibly by volunteers - again, as in other places.

If the boards were made totally seperate to any GR subscription, then no one could complain if they were banned or had their posts removed by a moderator. Or it could be a condition that the moderators decision is final and no discussions will be entered into. Whatever, it doesn't really matter.

I find the current system is rather old fashioned - there are far better alternatives available now.

Not that it matters to me - I'm off abroad again next month and shall be missing for a long time.

I agree with you Ian, there should be moderators on this board i think they have enough money coming in.
And it would put a stop to that disgusting behavior we were all subjected to last night.

I wondered this morning if GR would survive all this as it not very nice publicity, would you want to join this site?.

Enjoy your trip abroad and i'm sure you won't miss here one iota.

Helen.

I don't think anything will stop people posting nasty comments for their own idea of "fun"

These boards see this every now and again and it always settles again quite quickly.

I think it was a couple of years ago that everything got completely out of hand and GR closed all the boards for a while.

I only used Tips and record Office at the time, so don't know the full story.

The fewer people who respond to the troublemakers, the less impact it has...................but it's so difficult not to get dragged into a row sometimes:(

I don't know the full stories of any of the childish outbursts this board has seen because I don't get involved, I don't sit n watch n I don't add my two pennies worth in either.....but all I can say is from the snibbets n threads about this behaviour I have seen it appears to me that people enjoy it....dishing it out & getting involved. Alot of members I feel tease those who bite, by adding another thread branching off from an arguement to fuel the fire again n that's when all hell breaks loose.

If people acted their age there wouldn't be a problem.

Also, it appears to me that alot of these 'louder' members probably wouldn't say 'boo to a goose' if these arguments were face to face but as they can hide behind their keyboards they feel more power.

Anyway....that's the opionion of someone who see's things from the ouside in.....not from the inside out.

I'm sure someone will 'pick up' on something I said because thats how children start their fun.

Ian......make sure you say 'Goodbye' before you go... :o)

If you are banned, does the ban just stop you posting on the boards...............I assume you could still send pm's and the tree/search facilities despite the ban.

Or have I got it wrong?

Two comments :-

Moderators - hmmm - there are at least a couple of people on here who seem to act as moderators already, certainly not in favour of any member volunteers.

How come all the 'nasty' threads always have loads of replies - if they were left well alone, the perpetrator would not attract the attention they seem to crave...

The answer? I've no idea, but this has been true in the 5+ years I've been a member, so tis my belief it's human nature!

Ian - do you need an assistant - got room for a stowaway? :-)))

Well somebody needs to hold the golden dump button.
The feeding frenzy that ensues makes very ugly reading.
I find it interesting that those who were so vocal trying to reinstate a member before Christmas are strangely silent ?
Can you imagine the stupidity of being banned from a genealogy board....only in England could this happen.!

Lindsey, this just about sums it up, lol

Some people would start a fight in an empty room. The psychology of it is quite interesting.

Actually, no, it's not. It's sleep inducing.

To be honest it makes not a jot of difference as to the nature of the site

Simply because where you get a diverse collection of adults togeather in one place, over a short perion of time some will be drawn to others who are like minded thus you end up with groups

and once these groups are established lines become drawn between rivals hence there will be tense atmosphere the result a flame war

As to moderators yes a great idea but they must come form the GR staff not members of here

there is loads more i could add but i wont lol

I have to agree with Steve. If there are moderators, and I believe hell will freeze over first, then they have to be Gr staff and not members of this board.

Good evening Ian...

I have seen some rows on here just as bad as last nights.
I have been here 2 years and have seen it so many times. You will always get the people who do or don't like one or another I have even seen soe very sick dispicable acts on others sites to do with GR. Still GR carries on .
I Have heard a million times calls for mods and tobe honest I am not in favor of them after all we are all adults.. and as its been said....there are people on here who are friendly with some more than others....so that wouldn't work. ........like GR or Lump this is the way it is...these are our boards we use them ....its what the members make of them..

I think for all the fall outs we have a great community here and the help you get with your reseach is unbeleivable.....

Evening Hayley

Yes, I would say you are probably right, and its a matter of supreme indifference to me as I wont be carrying on after next month, but last nights thread was a little more sinister than normal, and this is why...

Some serious allegations were thrown around, and from a professional point of view I was sorely tempted to copy the whole lot and pass it on.

There is no way of knowing the veracity of the allegations, nor the age of the perons involved (although you can guess!)

I found it disturbing to look at the greater implications. A moderator would have binned it, but would it then be hiding someones cry for help......
