it has been proposed that soldiers killed in iraq could have their faces put on our postage stamps what do you think

Patricia Report 13 Mar 2008 15:55

ummmmmmmm don't know what to say about that...Joy..

AnnCardiff Report 13 Mar 2008 15:57

if their families agree, why not I say - they died in a foreign field at this country's behest - I think it would be a most fitting tribute

Well that's different, has it ever been done before?

I think returning deceased soldiers should have a parade through their home towns and all school children should be made to understand what these men and women have done for them. I know they are doing a job but it's not the same as working at Tesco's, is it? We need to celebrate our heroes so much more.

They certainly need commemorating. Don't know about the stamp idea, though.

Helen :))
Mum of 2 sons, neither of whom is in the forces.

Sounds a good idea. Putting faces to the anon' (cant spell) names makes it real. Rather than being forgotten. Sending letters and receiving them with the heros faces on them will remind everyone of what these brave people did for their country.

you'd maybe then have a back lash from the relatives of all those killed in N Ireland. Would there be enough stamps?

SORRY BUT DON'T LIKE THE IDEA AT ALL.
REMEMBER THEM - YES.
ON STAMPS? NO!!!

Dermot Report 13 Mar 2008 16:51

When Prince Harry arrived back from his shortened trip to Afghanistan, he spoke to reporters about two wounded colleagues who were on the same plane as him.

I wonder why they were not shown on TV as Harry was?

Soldiers on stamps? In Iraq alone, 174 British soldiers have been killed, not to mention those who were wounded. Bit of a problem with stamps, don't you think?

Lynne

Lynne Report 13 Mar 2008 16:55

my son was accepted into the army today i dont think i like the idea of the stamps i hope i never have to think about things like that

I wish your son all the best and God keep him safe Lynne.

I don't like the idea of the stamps, but I think the MP's in Westminster and Holyrood should have to look at their faces every day, and realise the big mistake they have made by putting out troops in.

Sorry to offend anyone, but that is just my opinion.

Helen in Kent

Helen in Kent Report 13 Mar 2008 17:07

Lynne you must be very proud of him but I understand your concerns. How fantastic that one of today's young men can think of something other than themselves and go for a job that he knows may put him in difficult situations.

AS I said earlier none of my children are in the forces but my dad was in the M.O.D. in the 60s and we celebrated our armed forces because they kept us safe.

Along with the loss of respect of many in this country for all people in positions of authority, it's as if our soldiers, sailors and airmen are simply playing computer games. When will they learn it's for real and our boys and girls are getting shot or killed on our behalf?

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 13 Mar 2008 17:08

I don't quite understand the bit about reminding us what they have done for us. What have they actually done for us?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 13 Mar 2008 17:10

I understand what you are saying in one sense Errol, but they are OUR armed forces and as such deserve our respect

Helen in Kent

Helen in Kent Report 13 Mar 2008 17:10

Errol. they serve at our government's request to protect our elected government and our nation against what it perceives to be threats against us all. If you don't agree with this then don't vote for them.

Deanna

Deanna Report 13 Mar 2008 17:14

I am a very lucky woman.... my son is still alive, after being in Ireland and the Falklands war.

Had I not been so lucky, and had he not come home, I would not be consoled by having his face on a stamp.

I do not agree with it, but then, many parents may and I cannot make the choice for them.

Bless them all anyway.

I respect our various forces tremendously - indeed my niece's partner has served several tours of duty as has my wife's colleague (a volunteer). But I do not agree that by travelling to Iraq they are protecting us and our government. From what, exactly? What is the current perceived threat against which they are defending?

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 13 Mar 2008 17:18

mind i do agree

a parade through their home town

would be a good idea

Deanna

Deanna Report 13 Mar 2008 17:25

Yes Joy a parade is nice for them.
Mine and all his mates from the town had a family party put on by the Council.
It was an afternoon affair and so the younger members of the family were able to come.
They then all had their photo taken on the steps of the civic building.

A nice day....
