Does anyone else remember camphor blocks, pink pills for pale people, Sloans back ache and kidney pills, Carters little liver pills. we put our lives in our own hands did't we ?

I reckon camphorated oil is responsible for the 32JJ size of my bust today - must have had gallons of the stuff rubbed in me during my childhood!!

These were some of my Mum's remedies my kids had to have a camphor block in a little gauze bag attached to their vest.to ward off chesty colds.

camphor was used for chest ailments and a deconjestion. i loved the smell of it
i still do have some old beechams powders . can you remember them being in little envolopes.
i have had them at least 20 years and i tried one and it still retained it taste.

Cephos powders were my Mum's favourite always had very bad headaches then doc found she had hypertension and treated same she died of brain haemorage.

Well see , if yur wore yur liberty bodice yur didnt get colds on yur chest!!.

Thats what my Mum said and we were practically sewn into them in Oct and not allowed to caste em off before May was out.
us girsl did have three of em tho .one on,one in the wash ,and one clean one .

we used to have a candle urning in our bedroom that let some menthol like vapour out i can smell it now it burned a oil cant think what it was called tho help xx

what must it have done to the chest then. just imagine a xray today after taking those remedies.
but i bet if we went back to them instead of antibiotics and we might be able to be curesd sooner.
they say antibiotics loose effect if used for a long time and what are they doing to our body!!!

What about "Bread Poultices" - anyone remember them.

Hi Linda and Tina Mum died 1989 aged 86 she had altzheimers so it was a blessing but I still feel guilty about agreeing to her having diamorphine to ease her passing, she started fitting and it was horrible to watch, ther was no hope and we stayed with her three days and nights.

Yes , I have a lot of tales to tell in fact I have made a lot of notes and intend to record them for my children and g-children. My daughter is 50 in March and still goes on about liberty bodices and navy fleecy knickers.

Dad suffered from carbuncles and boils and used Kaolin poultices I also rember bread poultices and Jackson's drawing ointment and Melrose block for chapped hands.

i have worked with people suffering from this condition and well aware of what it does to families. it is so sad. but what you did is a blessing.and may i say that if i was to become in that situation i would expect my children to do the same.

mickey i remember my mum havig to be applied with a kaolin poltice they had to boil the little tin in a pan of hot water then paste it onto a peice of lint or rag and apply directly to the skin whilst burning hot . i remember my mum screaming with the pain.
other remedies for drawing was sugar and soap.

I've discust this with my very understanding GP who told me Mum would thank me and my sister said I shouldn't feel thi way but I can't help it. maybe I should see a shrink every time I dream of her I'm having a row with her it's awful.

your dreams mickey are part of your anxieties of what you had to do. you are battling with yourself not your mum.
just remember your helped her to be at peace and not to suffer in silence.
please try to be positive and you do not need a shrink i promise.

do you remember Syrup of Figs. Saturday night was syrup of figs/ bath night/hair wash in the metal Bungalow bath in the kitchen. all the hot water was heated up in buckets on the gas cooker and it was youngest two first then the next two then each one til it was Mum then Dad after we had been put to bed.! every so often some water was bailed out and fresh hot water added BUT we were 7 kids plus Mum & dad so they bought the short straw. mind you we were strip washed every night anyway so werent grimed in dirt by Sat.

There was a very urgent queue for the outdoor lavvy on sat morning!!

Thanks Linda, never thought of it that way, helps a lot will remember in future I'm normally a very positive person but these dreams have really been bothering me.
