Has anyone any idea whether the BMD on Ancestry is complete. I've got a gr. gr grandmother called Ellen Kidger and daughter Ammay(?) shown on the 1871 census but they've both disappeared on the 1881 census. They've both obviously died as the rest of the family appear, albeit split up. I've trawled through every death from 1871 to 1881 and apart from feeling dizzy I've got nowhere.

Always beware of that word 'obviously'! Perhaps they're living in a completely different part of the country?

I was going to say - if someone disappears from a census 9 times out of 10 its because they've changed their name (got married, etc) or been mistranscribed. I don't believe Ammay was called Ammay either - have you looked for Amy? and Kidger could easily be rendered Kedger, Ridger, Bidger etc. nell

I know this sounds silly but was kidger her married name or her maiden name. I was really stupid once and spent months looking for my great grandmother's death certificate under her maiden name until it dawned on me she died under her married name!!! DOH!!!! I'm sure you're not as daft as me but just in case!!

I have a relative who appears in a census under her maiden surname after her husband died, but whose death was registered under her married name. All sorts of reasons why this stuff happens...!

On 1891 George listed as married George Kidger abt 1829 Thorpe Acre, Leicestershire, England Lodger 5 Regent Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire, England and in 1901 listed as widower George Kidger abt 1831 Thorpe, Leicestershire, England Pauper Shardlow Derbyshire

1871 has Ammay's age as 3 months so chances are her birth would be registered in first quarter of 1871: Kidger, Amy Record Type: Births Quarter: March Year: 1871 District: Stockton Volume: 10a Page: 67 I believe Stockton is next door to Middlesbrough on the map. nell

appaerently the bdm is only just over 50% complete but the bdm beta images is supposed to be complete, i have been looking for a marraige for 9 months and to no avail but now the beta is on ancestry i have managed to find the marriage. Debra (davids sister)

Wow!. Thanks for all your replies, you're all right on my family tree. I'm still very new to all this and feeling my way around but I'm sure you're right on the birth and death being in 1871, I don't know how I missed it although my eyes were going around in circles staring at the screen all that time. Not sure whats happened to Ellen Kidger, she was only 38 in 1871 and only assuming she died as they didn't really divorce then did they

Jennifer No, divorce was unlikely. But if you haven't found a death, its possible that she and her husband split up and possibly went through a bigamous marriage. Does her husband say he is widowed or appear on another census with a different 'wife'? nell

Me again, I've just read the replies again, and just picked up on Elaines answer from Spain. If George says he's still married in 1891 and a widower in 1901, then Ellen must still be around in 1881 but the family have definitely split up. The plot thickens, pity I don't know her maiden name
