Just for the record............

In 1911, Charles, 40, Margaret, 3, and Robert,1, Keating were lodgers in the home of Walter Alexander, 67, his wife, Margaret, 55, sons Walter, 23, & Robert, 22, and daughter Sarah, 16

The ages of the Alexander 'parents' match quite closely those of 1901 census on FMP, but the forenames clearly DON'T. They say they have been married for 37 years, have had 9 children, of whom 6 are living

I think 1901 was probably very badly-written - in fact, FMP couldn't decipher the surname at all.......................

Hi. Sorry yes she got married in Canada after meeting my dodgy grandad on the ship going there. Dodgy as in a bigamist and who was going to go to jail in Ireland so he fled the country. He was a salesman for Singer Sewing Machine company. Ive had to look through paperwork as i couldnt remember what certs i do and dont have. I cant find her marriage cert now. The mother Mary is missing in 1911 too so maybe they had gone visiting somewhere on census night. I have the passenger list from 1928 although its a bad copy and hardly readable.
I also couldnt find my grandad for years having been told his name was James O'Donnell. Once i found out he was actually Isaac Sylvester and not James it got easier, although he did a disappearing act around 1936 and wasnt seen again!
Thanks for all your help

There are three Mary Keatings in 1911, of the right age +/- 1.

Two of them have middle initials, so I'm discounting them. One in Midlothian, one in Angus.

There's one in Calderhead, Lanarkshire, with no middle initial.
However, she's with children (James 11, Michael 2, Mary 9, Richard 0, John 6) whose mmn is Brannen.

So no sign of the right Mary, unless she's badly mistranscribed.
I searched for age 26-37, and only those three came up.

She wasn't 'known' as Jeanie - that was her given name when her birth was registered

Could you answer my query about when and where she married..............I presume she did, as you refer to her as your grandmother

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 20 Feb 2026 12:19

If you 'HAVE' the info, why did you say Louisa was 'missing' from 1921 census?????

Why didn’t you look for in her married name???????

Yes i have that info. Her birth cert, Louisas marriage cert. I just paid for that 'Jane' one. Definately Jane and not Jean. She was known as Jeanie too. It does seem strange that she is missing on 2 census. She did exist as i met her as a kid ??
