That's useful to know, Gwyn. I haven't had cause to register any female deaths recently, so wasn't aware that the question is asked.

Of course, it depends on how much the woman in question told the informant ;-) ;-)

Dora will find out when she gets the cert

Nowadays, at a registration of death, people are asked if the deceased used any other names.
The informant may not know or does not state any other names, so we are reliant on whatever information they give.
If any other names were notified, this will be picked up by the registation and the death listed under those surnames too.
I once ordered a death certificate only to receive the information made out with a different surname, because the woman had remarried and the informant had known this and given each surname.

You clearly know all about your mother’s family, so I will not do any further research.

Death cert shows name at death and maiden name - info on GRO site, or found by googling

Jennie and Williams children, son William Kenyon born Jun 1916, died Nov 2004,
daughter Jennie Aug 1918 died May 1996, son Robert George born 1920 died May 1940 Dunkirk, Their father William died Nov 1921. Next came Irene (my mother) born Apr 1923, then there is a Basil born Dec1924. It got confusing as they named their children after themselves

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 4 Jan 2026 19:13

There was also a child named George born in 1920, and said she was MARRIED on 1921 census

JennyWren

JennyWren Report 4 Jan 2026 19:01

Just a quick question would a death certificate give info of all the names she used or just birth name

JennyWren

JennyWren Report 4 Jan 2026 18:54

Yes Jennie was her mother but her father wasn't William as he died towards the end of the first world War, guess her dad must have been a Mr Bristow but which one will never know. Not knowing her father's name do you think it's possible to work backwards from this marriage cert to prove it's the right Irene, birth date is same does that prove it's my Irene. Oh Irene also had a half sister also called Jennie and half brother they were William's children.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 4 Jan 2026 18:19

Research suggests that her father’s name was William K Edwards…mother was Jennie V Belsham, who, by 1939, was named Hutson, having re-married in 1932

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 4 Jan 2026 18:05

The 1987 death registration shows DoB to be 5/4/23……..did you see it?

It’s on page one - posted by myself and another helper

Unless you know her father’s name, the marriage cert won’t prove anything

Been looking though your previous searches, after much searching myself I found that Irene's Evelyn Edwards was my mother's birth name but l only ever new her by Bristow, then got confused with mistaken entry of Bristone on mother's maiden name. Her date of birth was 5th April 1923 place of birth Dartford, she was in the ATS in Kingston Barracks, and married Bernard in 1942, there son was born in 1943, she met my dad at the end of war celebrations, the last we knew of her was 1947. Possibly Bernard and her never divorced as she seems to have used the Edwards name for successive marriages and Bernard might have got married on board ship. I have sent for her marriage cert to Mr Thompson that took place in 1980 as I need to prove to myself it's the right Irene, she seems to have been around the block a bit, have a feeling there would have been other marriages between 1947 and 1980. Your 2020 info had a lot of the same as mine,

I think Irene married a Gerald Patrick Thompson. He is in a newspaper article with the address 53 The Mount, Coopers End, Takeley in 1970 which is the same address Irene died at.

You’ve been given the death registration info - use it to order a copy certificate

Hope it helps to clear your mind.

Yes I'm Irene's daughter, it took me years to find out all that info you did in minutes. Bernard's info is correct as far as going to Australia and the child, he was registered under his mother's name then Gilham. But I'm not related to any of them. I was brought up using my dad's name Jeffery, it sometimes feels as l never existed as Dora Jeffery never had a birth cert. and yet everyone who knows me wouldn't know I'm registered as Gilham. At this point in my life I'm really trying to put a closure on my mother's life so a death cert would be what I need but what name would she have

alviegal

alviegal Report 3 Jan 2026 13:39

Irene's residence at death was Residence 53 The Mount Caravan Park, Takeley

If this is Bernard R(alph) Gilham in 1939, he seems to have remarried and gone to Australia.
