It's not uncommon for people to be known by their middle name. In your grandfather's case, he was named after his father but went by John to avoid confusion.

Yes i remember i had found Daisy living with Annie Mays husband & family & Annie May was a housekeeper in Salisbury to a Mr Glass whom she later emigrated to australia with & had more children.
I think John sorry Robert jnr was in army but i cant find Robert snr & wife & any of the younger children.

It would have been one of his children that registered his death in 1959.
Like me they probably thought his name was John Robert too.

So Constance knocked a few years off her age. Could be whoever registered John's death didn't know when he was born.
