Just another instance Sylvia's made me think of - my Hurst ancestors were "Hursts" back to 1773 in the church records, but before that - for some unknown reason (change of priest?) they were "Herst" in those records but "Hurst" in 1767 when the "first couple" got married at the other church in the town.

Another really interesting one I came across - what was just Chaddock in one parish record batch on the IGI seems to have split two ways - into Haddock and Caddick. And the popular name Molyneux in that area can be spelt any old way - Mullineux and Molinee being just two!

Carole

You always have to watch out for misspellings and/or mistranscriptions.

Your own name could be Carol for example! Or it could have been transcribed as Carola.

That is one reason why I do most of my searching on part names ...... using the wild card symbol *

thus Wilf* will pick up Wilfred and Wilfrid.

Lou* will pick up Louisa, Louisa, and the very common misspelling Lousia

I would also use Johns* .... to pick up Johnson, Johnston, Johnstone, etc

This becomes more and more important as you go further and further back on the censuses and parish registers ..... remember most of our ancestors couldn't spell (they couldn't even write!!), so they wouldn't know if an official misspelled their name .... and that official was probably only a little more literate anyway!!

Sorry, being new I hadn't realised about differences in names. Unfortunately I have no relatives from this side of the family I can ask. Although I do remember visiting both Nella and Miriam as a small child. I am attempting to search parish records to see if this will clarify
I am grateful for your help

Sorry no I don't have Wilfreds birth cert, I will send for a copy. I do know Miriams birth was never to be talked about in the family.
Thanks for the help, maybe my next step should be baptisms, that may narrow down Miriam

Any children she had after Luther and before Tom would still have the surname Johnson because that's her surname.

So Luther died in 1889.

Do I put this down to saving face in that day and age although the time difference between fathers death and childrens birth seems a bit exesive even for that or am I missing something more

Carole

Carole Report 20 Nov 2008 23:42

Hi Rose
Yes this is the census, as you can see Wilfred and Miriam listed as Johnson were both born after Luther Johnson's death. It is Miriams birth I am looking for can't find her under Johnson but Miriam Nutter is older than Nella by birth cert and I know thats wrong
Thanks for reply

My gggrndmother Jane Youngman B1860 mLuther Johnson.
4 children later Luther dies but she stillseems to haveat least 1 child by him Wilfred b1894 then along came a Miriam (maybe johnson1897 1901census) She then married a Tom Nutter child born1900 named nutter, but the only birth cert I can find for Miriam is Miriam Nutter bmay/june 1901. Anyone have any ideas what all this means
