Teresa Report 12 Feb 2026 17:15

Hi could anyone find a death notice for a James Lynch who died in the March qtr of 1954, registered in Newark.
In 1911 he was a Domestic Coachman to a Gentleman Farmer but my friend thought her Grandad was a Groom, and thought it could have been Melton Mobray. But she is hoping to find out if there was anything about him,
Thank you if anyone can help.

Teresa

Teresa Report 12 Feb 2026 17:21

should have said James was born in County Meath, Ireland and may have emigrated to America and then came back but my friend is not sure about that.

ErikaH, thank you for this extra information. Only thing I would like to find is the marriage of James and Eva and I have searched and cannot find it.
One of the census says they were married in 1904.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 13 Feb 2026 21:06

Kathleen’s birth has MMN Cook

Have you looked for a marriage in Ireland?

Eva was born in Cambridgeshire

1911 says married 7 full years, so could be 1903…IF they married

Teresa

Teresa Report 13 Feb 2026 21:19

I have looked as far as I can for a marriage in Ireland, but I don't have Ancestry or anything like that. Asked my friend and she can't think what her Grandma would be doing in Ireland, as you say she was born in Cambridge. I did know her maiden name was Cook/Cooke.

You don’t need a paid-for site to look for Irish BMD’s
Google Irish bmd…….can’t give you the link as I’m only on my iPad at the moment

The Irish 1901 and 1911 censuses are also FREE.

Perhaps James was already married when he met Eva……not unheard-of ;-)

ArgyllGran Report 14 Feb 2026 16:58

I don't see any definite sign of James going to the US - but James Lynch is a very common name.

Cottenham, where Eva's family lived, used to have a racecourse, so maybe Eva met him there.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 14 Feb 2026 17:03

His very lengthy obituary made no reference to his ever having gone to America, but, of course, the person who gave info to the press may not have been aware of any such trip

Teresa

Teresa Report 14 Feb 2026 17:45

It makes more sense that they met in Cottenham as he seemed to go to a lot of Horse related things. What I would be thinking about is why she went with him to Ireland when they were not married first!! Oh well we'll never know, but thank you both for the help

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Feb 2026 21:47

Perhaps they eloped. Maybe Eva's parents weren't in favour of her marrying an Irish jockey.

It might be to do with the fact that Eva was pregnant.
Their eldest child, James, was born 25 November 1905, according to 1939 Register.
They had married only 6 months earlier.

LYNCH, JAMES mmn COOK
GRO Reference: 1905 D Quarter in BINGHAM Volume 07B Page 468

It was a Registry Office wedding, and neither of the witnesses were family members - if that means anything.

But as you say, we'll never know!
