History of the Army Hospital Corps Formation: The Army Hospital Corps was raised by Royal Warrant on August 1, 1857, in response to medical service failures during the Crimean War. Purpose: Its main role was to provide orderlies to staff military hospitals, training them in tasks like the transport of the wounded. Reorganization: The corps reverted to the name Medical Staff Corps in 1884, but the organization was eventually merged with the Army Medical Staff to form the new Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) in 1898.

As there were no penalties for not registering births before 1875, his probably wasn't recorded.
It may also be that his 'father' was invented, unless, of course, he witnessed the marriage

I know this is an old thread, and that nobody looks at this board now - but happened to come across it and was intrigued. Just following it up for my own interest and entertainment!
The 1933 death seems to be correct:
MARTIN, JAMES MELVILLE 73 GRO Reference: 1933 D Quarter in ALDERSHOT Volume 02C Page 259
Image of death cert on an Ancestry tree:
Died 8/12/1933 at The Infirmary, Winchfield. The informant is an Infirmary official. James's address: Grasmere Cottages, Aldershot. Cause of death: Carcinoma of rectum. (Poor man).
1921 - again saying he was born in Yorkshire;

By 1939 Clarissa is "widowed", and living with her daughter Jessie and Jessie's partner Ernest F Harrison (they didn't marry until 1942, but Jessie was already using his surname), at Lower Barford Farm, Bramshaw, Hants.
On the other hand, the tree gives him Irish-born parents John and Catherine, living in Liverpool - but without proof, and that John is variously a cooper or labourer, not a seaman.
But anyway, still no birth for James! I suspect he was born in Liverpool, but for some unknown reason (between 1901 and 1911) started saying Shipley.
A tree on Ancestry says the "owner" had made enquiries of both the RAMC and MOD, but had been unable to trace any service record, in spite of James saying he was in the Army Hospital Corps. But of course, we know that many older service records no longer exist.
Address at marriage was Guards Hospital, Rochester Row.
"Rochester Row Military Hospital, London SW. A specialist venereal disease hospital for 301 men." https://tinyurl.com/rvswryuj
I can't see any definite record of him before his marriage - though in 1881 he MAY have been a chemist's assistant in Sydenham.
1890 (Alice's & Arthur's baptisms) he was a ticket collector. 1891, he was a Railway Baggage Registrar. 1901, he was a railway clerk. 1911, a traveller (bookseller). 1921, a general labourer.

I have been researching this James Martin so was interested to see the posts. I haven’t been able to find a birth record for him in Shipley or Liverpool. I do have the marriage certificate 19th April1884 for James and Clarie Isabel Grant. James was a Sergeant in the Army Hospital Corps living in Guards Hospital Rochester Row. She was residing at 2 Parker St Westminster. James’ father is John Martin, a Seaman in the Royal Navy. Her father was Henry Grant, a Messenger. The witnesses were M Boyle and L Honer. I appreciate previous posts were made in 2014 but hope that with the extra info from the marriage certificate that someone may be able to find a birth for James or marriage for his father John.
