My geography of England is not brilliant, so tomorrow I shall get out my map book and see where these places are in relation to each other.

Census places of birth can be erratic as can ages, so bear that in mind.

I know Jem, but as William was born in Skeffington (registered in FreeBMD as Billesden in 1858) and as that appears in each census up to, and including 1871, I have to assume that is correct.

Fast forward to 1891 and 1893 when two Wm Mortimers are shown as passengers on two ships arriving at Liverpool from New York. The profession of each is listed as 'painter' Admittedly not artist as my grandfather later called himself, but a possible explanation for William's UK disappearance. The ages also tally, although in one instance, not perfectly.

So if I've got this right, William and Clifford are one and the same person.

And these Williams are the same William on two different journeys? or are they two Williams?

If it's the same William on 2 journeys, was he back and fore on business as an artist, or was he accompanying an employer in some capacity?

That's the possibility, Jem :-)

I've sent of for the Death Certs (if I have the right deaths) for William's parents, Jane and Joseph. I have a possible death for Jane in Chorlton in in 1892 and a possible death for Joseph also in Chorlton in 1896. I believe that Jane may have been older than Joseph.

There is also a remote possibility that Joseph may not be Williams biological father :-0

I'm definitely no expert, but I have been very successful with my own family history.

Why don't you PM me all the names, dates and places etc. I love a mystery!

It may be worth looking into background info in connection with these wealthy employers.

I always go "sideways" too. It's amazing what you can uncover by following any seemingly trivial connections to the family.

Hi Allan :-)

I've just had a problem with my computer. I have a horrible feeling I've accidentally downloaded something dodgy! It was supposed to be an upgrade to Avast but I've deleted it now.

I'll have to run another scan tomorrow!

Hi, Jem :-)

Welcome to my world :-D When I used the shortcut to go to my downloads, the file I was taken to only had a few in it. I knew that I had downloaded many more records than were displayed :-(

When I tried a different method, there were ALL my downloads :-| :-D :-D

Thank you for the information that you sent. I have replied :-)
