JemimaFawr

JemimaFawr Report 18 Feb 2014 23:14

I've never tried whelks (to my knowledge anyway) cockles- with my eyes closed! We used to go cockling a lot when I was a small child.

Fruit Cocktail

Allan

Allan Report 18 Feb 2014 23:18

Cockles and whelks were sold in Northern pubs, usually on a Friday night. The vendors would just come into the pub with a tray full of little tubs of the things, pickled in vinegar, which were purchased by patrons pickled in alcohol :-D

Grapes

JemimaFawr

JemimaFawr Report 18 Feb 2014 23:24

They still do that here. My Son-In-Law is a cockler / musseler? / fisherman, but he is a supplier, he doesn't sell them to the public in general.

HOCK

Eat it or drink it- up to you :-D

Allan

Allan Report 18 Feb 2014 23:32

I love to simmer a pork hock for a good couple of hours, with sliced carrots, celery, sliced onions a couple of bay leaves and a few spices. Then strip the meat of the hock and put back into the liquid, which, if it has been cooked for long enough will turn into a jelly when it cools :-)

Jelly

JemimaFawr

JemimaFawr Report 18 Feb 2014 23:37
