Parsnips

There was absolutely torrential rain and gale force winds here this morning when I did the school run. I don't like driving in it especially with the children in the car as I feel that it affects my judgement of speed of cars etc. It's calmed down a bit but it's very warm for this time of year. I've got the fan on!

That's why I don't like driving an night, particularly on the country roads as I find that my perception of speed and distance is affected :-(

It is, Jemima, and already in WA we are being warned of a very sever bushfire season. The heavy rains means that controlled burns have not been able to be done. These burns control the undergrowth and reduce the fire burden. Up to 60,00 hectares should have been done in the state forests, only 2,000 have been done.

As well, the rain will encourage more undergrowth, which, when it dries out, increases the fire burden :-(

Other than that and the poisonous wildlife, it's not a bad country to live in :-D :-D

Vimto (A mixed fruit squash)

I saw that they are using the "Fight Fire With Fire" method that I've seen on documentaries. Trouble is that there is such a huge area that they would have to burn out now. The Firemen and volunteer workers are amazing!

Allan

Allan Report 21 Oct 2013 23:18

yes. It's called back burning. But with the fires on such a scale it's difficult. You only need a change of wind direction and it could all change. The other factor is that in the massive fires that are occurring in NSW they actually create their own climatic conditions, particularly winds

Is this the worst fire there's been in Australia to date Allan?

Allan

Allan Report 21 Oct 2013 23:27

On a par, Jemima. It may be over a wider area than some but in2009 there was a major bushfire in Victoria in which, unfortunately, 173 people lost their lives.

That's terrible. Is it still just one person that has died? It's terrible for the wildlife. They were showing people helping injured animals on the news. I think it was a possum that looked in a very bad way.
