From my first response on this thread.................

For anyone not knowing the history of the above, there are several threads about the name Sam/Samuel Rogers

If you send me a PM or post Dad's name/ Service number, I will look on Fold3/Ancestry for WWII, British Army Medal Cards, 1939-1945. This MAY lead to a unit identification. Can but try.....

I waited 22 months for my GF's record. Only just got it Nov 25.

Yes I went through the MOD and they took the details after many months they said records were being sent to the Archives they gave me my details to give to the Archives which I did there the ones who sent me nothing of interest .no war records .
So I don't know what to do .

ErikaH Report 1 Feb 2026 18:05

No matter where they were obtained from, there is only one set of records for any given individual.

I got mine from the MOD, but the system has changed since then.

Service records are gradually being moved from MOD to National Archives, so some are in one place and some in the other at present.
Eventually they will all be with the NA.

Because of all the work of transferring the records, it's also taking much longer to get a copy.
When they've all been transferred, I expect things will speed up again.

Can you please tell me if you want through the MOD and Archives like I was advised if not can you tell me your route to get the records .

I got my father's in 2015, for £30, and they took about 3 months, as far as I remember.

I can't quite understand this. I have both my father's and my father-in-law's army records.

They both name all the places they served and dates of when they arrived at each location and when they left.

I got them many years ago and at that time they cost £30 each and took around 9 months to arrive. I was really pleased with what I found in them.

I'm glad I'm not on my own they tell you find world war 2 records is rubbish
My dad went in September 1939 because he was in the Territorial Army so went in at the beginning of the war and came out in Dec 45 .My dad died when I was 13 so I just wanted to know where he served .He was in the Signals and I have his medals .
I still can't understand why they with hold these records what do they think we will do with them .

Same with my father's WW2 army record - just basic info.

The family story was that he had been at the siege (or relief) of Tobruk, but his record only says he was with the British North Africa Force, with no detail apart from some mention of Egypt.

He was definitely in Italy for a while, but his record doesn't mention that at all.

It doesn’t pay to expect too much from service records. My late husband’s WW2 RAF record has absolutely minimal information.

I asked if anyone could help me find my dad's war records WW2 I was pointed to the MOD.I wrote to them in June 24 reply after 7 months still searching 12 months later all records have been sent to Archives ..I had to contact Archives Jan 2025 finally sent me
redacted info.Waste of time everything they sent told me nothing I didn't know already. My dad was sent to France in 1940 I know he was at Dunkirk.I know who he married my mother and it was total trivia..They should have told me at the being I wouldn't have bothered .Now from Feb they are charging .They would give more info direct to my father good luck on that one he died in 1961.I even contacted the Signals nothing. So I am advising anyone looking don't bother.
