Firstly, could someone with FMP double check this record please for M Ryan: Reference: WO 417/50 Description: Casualty Lists - Other Ranks 930 - 943 Date: 1942 Sep 16 - 1942 Oct 01
Army service numbers, after 1920, were unique to the individual soldier and followed them throughout their service regardless of transfers, unlike WW1.
So in Michael's case we have the following to consider:
- He didn't complete all his Service with the Parachute Regiment He was with the Queen's Own initially, was wounded and then joined the Para's sometime thereafter
- Clerical error transcribing the information from the wounded list (hence my request for clarification on FMP)
From the website WW2 talk https://ww2talk.com/index.php?threads/5th-battalion-royal-west-kents.43411/
5th Battalion, The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment (T.A.) formed part of 132nd Infantry Brigade – 7 October 1939 to 26 November 1942
The Brigade embarked from England on May 27th, 1942 and arrived in Egypt on July 26th, 1942.
THIS IS NOW THE MOST LIKELY SCENARIO AS TO HOW MICHAEL WAS AWARDED HIS AFRICA STAR.
HE WAS SERVING WITH THE QUEEN'S OWN.
Op Market Garden was September 1944, so in theory he could have recovered from his injuries in '42 then joined 1 Para for the drop into Arnhem.....
Comments and Observations invited....

Further to ErikaH entry (Find Ancestors) dated 9 Oct 2025 14:05
"OK..........found a birth to match OP info Michael Joseph Ryan, father James, mother KATE, nee Dwyer **** 13 Dec 1918*****"
WWII, British Army Medal Cards, 1939-1945
Full Name Ryan, Michael Service Number 6350509 ************ Birth Date 13 Dec 1918 ************ Award Date 10 Jul 1996 Type Of Medal 1939-45; Africa; Defence; War Regiment Para Regt Discharge Date 3 Aug 1947 Medals issued to widow Died 14/02/1992
If you make an application for Michael's service record, you now have his service number. The waiting time is currently about 20 months.
EDIT: SEE NEXT ENTRY His Africa Star is likely to be a result of operations commencing in Tunisia from Nov 1942
1 Para were in Sicily in 1943, but as Michael was not awarded an Italy Star (for operations between July 1943 and May 1945), he must not have been with them at this time. So, where was he ........?? (wounded?)
The War Diaries for 1 Para in North Africa are only available to view at the National Archives, Kew. Here is the shortcut https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2354869

WW2 records are NOT online
Look at the thread below for link to site where you can apply….you may need to provide copy death cert
Connected to thread on Find Ancestors, where I gave you his exact DoB, which may help with your application
If he married whilst serving, the cert may hold some helpful info………
