I worked it out, it's counting those born outside of the london area. I had to go back a page to compare the pattern lol.

I've closed it now, but it could be the number not in work? or Unmarried, or even male...

Just as an little addition to this thread. One of my ancestors has "diabetic" written in the last column on the census form!

TW if it were counting etc wouldn't they all have the ticks? I admit that there are a high proportion of ticks on that column than what you normally see, but they're not all ticked which confuses me slightly.

~Summer Scribe~ Report 14 Jan 2008 22:13

Kelly, sometimes they do tick as they count etc, I never looked too closely but I did notice that the three children had ticks next to them. Sometimes rather than indicating the condition they just ticked it, infact that's the case more times than I've none them to clarify (as with the 'idiot' that I mentioned before). Whether they didn't have the time, didn't like to ask or just went with what was easiest, I've no idea.

Nah the ticks are there to show that particular entry had been recorded.

Sometimes lines are put across the end of each household, and sometimes asterisks, depends who was transferring the original copies onto the central record.

TW, when I first thought that I thought I was going nuts, but I think you're spot on.

I couldn't imagine that they would clarify what was wrong with him when they didn't the others.

Summer scribe, when you say this do you mean that the others all had something wrong with them? Well at least the ones with the ticks?

I thought somebody had just put the ticks on when they had been transcribing it or something? Because there are lots of marks and crosses on it i thought it was part of this?

**Eeek** You can see i am not very experienced!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allahabad

From there: "When these north western areas were made into a new Presidency called the "North Western Province of Agra", with its capital at Agra. Allahabad remained an important part of this state."

Yep, I'm certain it's England, added after Brighton Sussex. It's there to clarify that he was born in England and not India as above.

It's not meant to be in the last column, jsut that there's no room to add it in the where born column.

Maddiecow Report 14 Jan 2008 21:54

Me too I think It could be C looking at some of the other words but the end is likey to be ton look at Brighton - could it be an extension of the place of birth for example Brighton, Sussex - Clifton?

Last letter could be a d, based off "cumberland"

~Summer Scribe~ Report 14 Jan 2008 21:53

Too many letters after the L, maddie?

That letter has me confused, trying to find another that matches it in shape at the tail.

The more I look at it, the more it looks like England.

It's not an S if you compare it to others, like his sister Susannah.

If you look above, the entry right above was born in India, so England might have been added to clarify things.
