My hubby was born in newton Abbot and on my wall I have a painting of the clock tower there that he did.


Another little fact hubbys granddad who was a stonemason worked on buckfastleigh abbey.

And when we drive down hubby knows he is 'home' when the soil turns red.
Went at Eatser one year when we just had the two kiddies and it was raining and we travelled down by train but all laddo wanted to do was go to the beach, didnt matter how much it was raining or how cold thats all he wanted to do must be like his dad as he could spend hours on the beach. And it wasnt a case of laddo never seeing the sea or beach as at the time we lived in Hastings so could go when ever he wanted but never asked to.

Ann, No we were serving the Clowance Country Club 1995-1999, nice establishment. Don't know how about thse days but it used to attract a fair few celebs for the peace and quiet in the 1990's

Dawnie, when the children were young we spent many hours on beaches in Devon and cornwall in the rain.

Interesting that your OH's granddad was a stonemason who worked on the Abbey. Wonderful building but the monks were not much liked by the people who lived in Buckfast/Buckfastleigh. tony's parents are buried in the graveyard of the church on the hill Buckfast, which unfortunately is ruins now, albeit lovely ruins, since it was torched a few years ago.

Our shop was midway up the village street, (if you ventured into the village) opposite the Methodist Church which I think is now an apartment complex...small world hey?

We have had a couple of meetings at the old Still & West , and Gunwarf it is a lovely place overlooking the harbour entrance. We tend to meet at Gunwarf then make our way down to Southsea sea front on a good day. Greasy burgers and chips on Portsmouth front near the bus station takes me back a bit :):)

Hi Hampshire Colin, Haven't been to Pompey for about 5 years now but last time it had smartened itself up since my navy days in the 80's. On our last visit we stayed at the Sally Port and got happily confused at the Old Still & West Col :)

Yes small world Colin from staffs, didn't really venture into the village on foot. And my home town is Fareham not so far from the other Colin. I used to work for the admiralty expense accounts which was opposite the NAAFI club. I worked with somebody whose parents (I think) owned or managed the still and West in the 50s. But would you believe I have not yet been to Gunwharf!

Colin (Hampshire) My cousin had a lovely big house overlooking the sea called Southleigh which used to be a temperance hotel They also did B&B, they have still got it and rent it out but have had another house built in the grounds.

I had never actually stopped in Roche but have just looked at the net and realized what I have missed on the way through, the little chapel there looks amazing.


Colin :) Smartened itself up isnt the word for it, us Gosportonians have to take off our shoes now when we step off the ferry from Gosport lol

Camelford I have stayed in, a little place there called Julliot Wells a very lovely quiet little caravan park. It was so peaceful, I loved the little river that run through the small village there :)

Well all cornish lovers lol

We live in Hayle, hubby always lived here, I moved over from St.Ives when we married 21 years ago. Would not want to live anywhere else. Love Cornwall and its life style.

I know how lucky I am to live 5 minutes from the most beautiful beach in the world, all 3 miles of it.
We of course have the famous pasty shop, Colin I think you know it well.

I live in Barnstaple, though I was born in Essex. Hubby's a "yokel" from Ilfracombe. I used to live in a little village called Combe Martin, near Ilfracombe - do you know it, Colin? You must have visited it in the past! :-)
Back to Laura, though: as I said on Colin's "introduce yourself" thread, hubby's got family in Jacobstowe, which is near Okehampton. As you say, small world, eh.

I love Cornwall and have visited about 5 or 6 times in all, couple of times I stayed in Falmouth, Waveyone, at a little flat in Penmere Hill, and also stayed at Kennack Sands, Playing Place and Looe.
Have a photo of me in June 1998 in the pouring rain, brolly up, raincoat on and paddling in the sea at Kennack!!

Hoping to get back there this Maytime.

I love Devon and Cornwall although have only been there twice, once when I was 12 and then in 1996 with Bob and my mum. When we were there our base was in Croyde Bay and almost every day we went to Barnstaple. Several years later, when I decided to do my tree, I discovered that my gggrandmother was born in Barnstaple! Oh, how I wish I had started this search before our trip to England! What treasures I might have found.

We travelled all over Devon and Cornwall, but my favourite places were Mevagissey ( a childhood memory of eating cockles and mussels from a grease proof bag) and St Mawes where my dad had worked at the Ship and Castle inn many years ago.
Bob loved Tintagel and all the lovely ruins.
We will definitely return there some day.

isnt it funny, i have no knowledge of any ancestors coming from Devon or cornwall, but its what i call my spiritual home

if i could move down to north cornwall today i would,
as children we spent lots of happy bucket and spade holidays there, and i always feel like its going home when im there,
Cant explain the feeling of peace, i just sit on the rocks for hours looking out at the sea, its quite uncanny,
Last year we were down in Polzeath, and i knew the place, and had not been before,

Maybe another life, who knows, either that or i was a mermaid once upon a time and spent lots of time there lol

As soon as i win the lotto, i will be there, no question about that, keep your fingers crossed for me

Love cornwall and traced my ancesters back there but I always knew they were from there as my grandad told me and we have a cornish surname. It is my spiritual home and I've just book our summer holiday there again but luckly the family all love it almost as much as me. If I ever win the lottery that's where I shall be going, sort of like comming home really. My cornish ancesters moved up to manchester in the late 1800's so I think it's about time we went back....I wish.
